November 21, 2010 at 16:20 #329109Chuffed to see Hello Bud win at 12. I had him all last season, but i subbed him for Royal Rosa in the end and was given a great run for my money. What a race.
Shame Notre Pere was hampered so much. Bumped early on, hampered at the pile up, stopped to a walk at bechers and again at valentines. Worked wonders to keep going and get 5th. He’s set for the National i reckon.
Itish Raptors Becher form: 6-6-U-6
November 21, 2010 at 17:36 #329127Good performance by Hello Bud, but a word of warning for those of you who’d back him in the Grand National – no 13-year-old has won since 1923.
I’moncloudnine unseated at the Canal Turn, but I’m still pleased with him, as he seemed to be taking well to the fences. I’ll be looking at him come April!

So don't run, just like the others always do

The has only been 3 teenagers that won the national according to records, Why Not in the 1890’s was the other 13, and Peter Simple in 1856 is the oldest at 15. Peter Simple won it earlier too, and Sergeant Murphy in 1923. So a 13 year old has to be something really extra special if its to defy the statistics.

How many 13yo’s with Hello Bud’s profile have actually run in the race? You’d be pushed to find many winners of that age winning the National, when there’s few who run of that age in the first place. Only one runner in the last 4 runnings.
November 22, 2010 at 17:09 #329256I remember one chaser decades ago, who actually ran better as a fourteen-year old than at any time in his career; winning several fair handicaps races, if I remember corectly. Can’t remember his name, unfortunately.
November 22, 2010 at 17:23 #329261Rondeto?
November 22, 2010 at 18:33 #329276Rondetto came third as a 13 year old [his best performance in the race] but unseated as a 14 year old in 1970.
He must have been in decline as a 14 year old because his weight had gone down from 11.6 as a 9 year old to 10.5 for his final appearance in . I always remember him because one of the newspaper clippings that I kept about the race said ‘Rondetto will never get round the National course because he tends to peck on landing’. He seemed to have been around forever when I was a child. What he achieved away from Aintree I have no idea.November 22, 2010 at 19:29 #329285Good performance by Hello Bud, but a word of warning for those of you who’d back him in the Grand National – no 13-year-old has won since 1923.

Yes you are right with only 1 in the last 4 years

However between 1989 and 2010 can’t go back any further because Racing Post records only go that far there are

November 22, 2010 at 22:10 #329329Bookies must love you.
Let’s forget about the 28 teenagers who have tried to win the national since 1989 and failed.
The statistics say horses aged 8 to 12, but why?
This is just my theory on why and the be lot’s of people who will argue the toss. This forum is full of them.

7 year olds lack the experience and 13 + lack the speed. As you get older you’ve not as fast or nimble as you used to be, horses as well. If this trend is broken I think it’ll be by a 7 year old who matured quickly.

I think you may mean Mac Vidi trained and owned by Pam Neal he had an extraordinary season in 79/80 even finishing up placed in the Gold cup .
I believe he died soon after its as though he was on a final flingNovember 22, 2010 at 22:53 #329345Bookies must love you.

I think its also because 8 to 12 year olds are also more battle hardened .
If you look at most National winners and placed horses they are used to the hustle and bustle of big fields in races run at a proper pace.
Unfortunately though most 13+ year olds have run with credit in the race anno domini has caught up with them .November 22, 2010 at 22:54 #329346
