Ballydoyle introduced this son of Fusaichi Pegasus at Naas last week. He won a maiden on his second start by 20 lengths. He galloped up to the post like he was galloping down to the start.Murtagh could not conceal his astonishment and said after words that he,the horse was the real thing. Whatever that meant. Watch it on ATR.
July 21, 2008 at 03:26 #173974That certainly was impressive. Surely he’ll be entered up in all the top races now.
July 21, 2008 at 08:56 #173983Means nothing now because it is now general knowledge – but I sort of expected this … … …
July 21, 2008 at 09:02 #173985Zulu Chief has been well touted and ¨known about¨ before he ever set foot on a racecourse.
July 21, 2008 at 09:30 #173991Yeah – it was me thinking of this in my own imaginary world a few weeks and months back. Big deal, I guess!
Had a soft spot for Race For The Stars – she was half of Hawk Wing for ability, but I always felt that Magnier/O’Brien had not quite figured out the crossing of FuPeg to La Lorgnette but there was potential. Like an Antonius Pius or Yesterday in terms of harnessing ability and leveraging it to the deserving levels.
Better watch the race – ATR I hope???
July 21, 2008 at 10:01 #173995I watched the race the other week there and Zulu Chief certainly looked very impressive.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
July 21, 2008 at 10:12 #173997very impressive indeed. i didnt realise he was a 3yo though. where has he been?! i do remember hearing the name though some time ago being touted up. interested to see where he goes next.
July 21, 2008 at 14:11 #174019He obviously didn’t beat much there but he is an imposing horse and its no surprise they’ve taken a while to get him on to the course. They may keep him to a lighter campaign to save him for next year when he could be a middle distance force.
You won’t see many easier maiden wins though.
August 6, 2008 at 17:37 #176305Zulu Chief may run in Sunday’s G2 Royal Whip Stakes (10f). AOB is yet to decide between running him or King of Rome or both. Hope it’s Zulu.
August 6, 2008 at 19:23 #176311It was a really poor maiden by Naas standards. The second was beaten nearly as far in a Galway maiden last week.
August 8, 2008 at 02:47 #176399Was irrelevant . He finished like it was only a work out.Which it was after he lost the field.Twenty lengths it was.
August 8, 2008 at 12:27 #176415An interesting horse, unraced at 2, third in April at Newmarket in a division of the Wood Ditton, the form of which looks ordinary, and off until his maiden win so must have had problems.
Unsurprisingly for AOB he a host of entries in Aug, Royal Whip, Ballyroan, the Voltigeur, Juddmonte International and Celebration Mile and also has entries in Irish & English Champion Stakes. I wouldn’t think he is GR1 class but who knows.
August 11, 2008 at 01:56 #176690Zulu Chief is the horse Aidan O’Brien named at a press day back in March when he was asked to nominate an unraced three-year-old to watch out for this season. He seemed to be the first string at the Curragh on Sunday even with King Of Rome in the race. On the contrary, I would be surprised if he doesn’t end up running at Group One level.
August 13, 2008 at 16:13 #176902Is entered in the Juddmonte I believe but may run at Leopardstown in race transfered from the Curragh
August 15, 2008 at 13:39 #177072He’s down to run on sunday – 5 runners, 3 of which are O’Briens and Murtagh rides Zulu Chief.
I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t win but with King of Rome in the race it should be a decent test. I could see this colt turning up in the English Champion Stakes or maybe the Arc.. Not sure whether Fusaichi Pegasus offspring will get the trip in the Arc given the usual soft conditions, his dam side gives hope though.
Could turn into a live outsider for that race…
August 15, 2008 at 22:36 #177108Murtagh rides King of Rome on Sunday.Zulu Chief running in the Arc would be a strange move.
August 16, 2008 at 00:35 #177117They wouldn’t be rushing Zulu Chief into anything more serious as yet.
Back to reality – he’s won a maiden at Naas. Margin to second was a similar margin to what that second received at Galway.
Yes, ZC essentially jog-trotted the race in but it was insignificant to Group 1 or 2 company for now.
