Most races 462 metres 4 bends, sharp little track doesn’t suit a galloping dog.
I’ve started going to these meetings on occasions and absolutely love it, but of course it’s best to be involved and there are 5 dogs I have a share in. All puppies and hopefully will all be running in puppy Open’s. One is in a Peterborough Puppy Derby heat this Saturday as he was one of the 36 fastest triallers. Trouble with Peterborough, so I’m told, it’s a railers track and my dog is a wide runner…so we’ll see.
Yarmouth seems to have a good friendly atmosphere and a delicious meal to be had in the restaurant. It’s just across the road from the racecourse in Yarmouth.
From what I gather it’s become a very hard game now and difficult to attract owners, consequently a number of tracks shutting down. The way forward seems to be with syndicates. Up to 20 members in some of mine. Others have 150 or 200…lol…I wouldn’t like that
We can also visit the kennels and take the dogs for a walk. Now, we can’t do that with the horses can we?
April 9, 2010 at 12:05 #288848How much does it cost to purchase an average dog and do training fees vary, please, Ugly Mare?
April 9, 2010 at 13:08 #288876hi Ken,
To purchase an average dog I would say, from what I’ve been told, about £800-£1000 outright. For that sort of money, at Yarmouth, you’d get a dog around the A3 grade at least.
Handy if you have 3 other interested friends as £200 each doesn’t sound half as bad.Training fee for a racing dog
, is about £180 a month [£6 a day]. Obviously I’m only aware of my own syndicate here but believe it’s roughly the average for around the country, but then you can knock off any win or place money.
Say it wins once or twice a month and runs unplaced a couple more times, then it brings the fees down. If you got 2 wins a month out of your dog then you probably wouldn’t get a kennel bill at all for that month.
As an example of an A3 graded dog at Yarmouth [other tracks may differ].
He has had 3 runs so far in a month, and it won once winning £80 and say the other 2 runs he finishes last.
He gets appearance money for those two where he finished last of about £23 per run. So that’s £126 takings for that month. Take that off the £180 a month and we’re left with £54 kennel bill. If there are 20 of you in the syndicate then obviously it’s only about £2.50 a month per person. If your dog is A6 grade then win money is about £55 and appearance money about £18.
Incidentally, I have heard that a trainer in Romford, Essex, who obviously will run his dogs at that track, and these dogs are around the A4 or A5 grade, are being given away free of charge, but to remain with him in his kennel, but the owners will only pay the kennel bills, and he charges the same fees.
So again, if there’s 4 of you, it’s £45 a month each less any win/appearance money.April 10, 2010 at 08:16 #289127Hi U M
I too am involved in a few greyhounds and im off to Peterborough tonight as i have a runner in the heats of the Puppy Derby.
Syndicates and small partnership are the way forward as it can be expensive owning a dog outright.

April 15, 2010 at 10:59 #290392…thanks to both of you
I don’t bet on dogs hayes – my husband does and he got me into all this
….
hi Nathan,
He’s called ‘Droopys Brandon’ and he really needs 6 bends. This dog has been ill, some viral condition, but the trainer has shown a lot of patience to get him right. Signs were there last week as he came second.
Last night he made up 2 lengths on the trap 2 dog off the last bend and won by 3/4 in a good time, 28.48.
There is another I’m in with called ‘Droopys Djokovic’ that is running at Yarmouth on Saturday, again an A1 and this looks a tough heat.
I can guarantee this dog will be last at the first bend as he’s another who needs 6 bends but given a clear run he will start picking them off down the back straight and hopefully come with a late rattle.
Last time he won an A2 so he’s been upgraded this week.
We cannot expect him to win this though.I appreciate you showing an interest
April 15, 2010 at 11:48 #290400Good luck at Yarmouth UM – if you ever get a grader you might want to slip the Racing Manager a few quid
April 15, 2010 at 17:47 #290469..thanks Martin…
I wouldn’t dare
April 15, 2010 at 19:14 #290493Well you PM me with the Saturday night good things UM

Good luck and I look forward to following your posse’s progress
April 15, 2010 at 21:48 #290517I wish you all the best UM with the Droopys Brandan and Djokovic, hope they bring you and your husband some fun times.

I dont suppose you would know if the retired ones make good pets? We had to let the mad collie go when our son was born, he’s three now and wants a dog and we think it’s about time to get another dog.
