How many new people do we need to attract though, already the courses are jam packed to the brim when I attend. Even when I go to little events like Wincanton and Taunton it’s sardines stuff.
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
February 12, 2018 at 18:16 #1341907Of course Gosden and “top trainiers” would want it, they have a glut of handicap quality horses they can throw at the competition and make a load of money from.
Trainers are indeed going to want it, anything that produces the chance of winning good money they’re going to be in favour. That’s not a good enough reason not to have it though.
As I understand it – there’s going to be teams of 30 named horses. So trainers can club together. Hopefully they could make it so those 30 come from the same(ish) number of possible participents. ie I’d be in favour of each yard’s 3 year olds and up be added together, plus all another yard’s 3yo+, plus another’s etc to be in the same team added together etc. So every team of 30 come from say a possible 300 horses. Therefore, a trainer with a big string would not have an unfair advantage; and small yards whose numbers in the strings add up to 300 can club together.
Could also be teams from every/most parts of the country, to get people interested in their local team.
Newmarket East
Newmarket West
Middleham
Lambourn
South West
Yorkshire
North
Midlands
etcMore I think about it the more I like the idea.

Where does O’Brien and Coolmore fit into then Ginge…?Charles Darwin to conquer the World
February 12, 2018 at 18:29 #1341916Could be just a British team competition, Nathan.
But if Ireland wants a team then why not let them? Adds another dimention to it.How many 3 and 4 year olds do O’Brien and Bolger have between them?
Every part of the country would have a team for locals to get behind.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 12, 2018 at 18:35 #1341919Okay, why will the public be interested in this series?
It is going to be a Thursday evening affair during the summer months. The horses running in those races are not Group or Listed Class yet. Each team has 30 horses to chose from for the six races staged on every race card. So there will be six handicaps worth 100,000+ over six various trips. In the end you have about 5 different horses for each distance. What happens if one of your horses wins 2 races and his rating would be somewhere around 110? Will it be eliminated from the competition and will the “team horses” be allowed to contest other races OUTSIDE this competition?

Do you think that companies like Tag Heuer, Louis Vuitton, Emirates, Rolex, Bentley and so on would care a single bit about the “locals” having a team?
No way, it’s going to be a profit thing just like F1….

If I had my way because they’re local teams, but am not in charge.

If the handicap is for those up to “110”, then the horse won’t be elligable for the race. But if a horse wins two races then it has surely done very well and generously contributed to the team score. For the sake of keeping scores tight it’s good the horse is no longer available and can’t score more points.
Will it be eliminated from the competition and will the “team horses” be allowed to contest other races OUTSIDE this competition?
The rules state horses can take part in races outside the competition.

Of course it should be “a profit thing”, and yes exactly, companies probably won’t care – therefore local teams can be used.
If John Gosden wants to be in a team then he should be with another Newmarket trainer/s, not picking another yard from Yorkshire etc.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 12, 2018 at 20:20 #1341930What an amazing Idea…..Incredible foresight.
But hold on……teams of trainers and jockeys getting together over a slap up chicken wing dinner,to decide which horses run in a 12 runner handicap?
“owners,trainers,yards and jockeys all benefiting”
They have given you the answer themselves in that article.
Just about sums up the current state of this sport, totally unregulated and an absolute free for all, with punters being fleeced on a daily basis.
Send the money to the Irish Stewards, perhaps they might then tell us the outcome of the betting patterns they wanted investigating via betfair?
Truly rancid idea, that will only go further to enhance racings current reputation.

More chance of me riding a Derby winner than any of these getting involved here. Reputational risks to global brands would make this toxic: possible whip offences, falls, serious injuries or death of a horse and they’d face perhaps billions wiped off their shares.
Every major brand these days is ultra wary of anything that could kick off some boycott. The power of social media is leading to some pretty crazy reactions.
I just read a grovelling apology by Sony over their new Peter Rabbit film which features the use of a character’s food allergy against him (the offenders are a bunch of cartoon rabbits). Here’s one of the complaints that drew the apology:
Kenneth Mendez, the president and chief executive of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, saw the movie on Saturday. When the rabbits fire a blackberry into Mr. McGregor’s mouth, Mr. Mendez said, “there’s a close-up of his face, and it’s him holding his neck like he’s choking.” When Mr. McGregor collapses and appears to be dead for a moment, the rabbits cheer.
Mr. Mendez said in an open letter to the moviemakers that they should not mock food allergies, which are often life-threatening.
“Making light of this condition hurts our members because it encourages the public not to take the risk of allergic reactions seriously, and this cavalier attitude may make them act in ways that could put an allergic person in danger,” it said.
What next, an apology over Superman jumping from a building because of health and safety concerns? Or maybe that “making light of the disability our members suffer in not having a similar ability to fly risks causing them feelings of low self esteem”?
February 12, 2018 at 21:09 #1341939Ginge, not only that you seem to like the idea about this new series (nothing wrong with that!) you also seem to be the first one in possession of their rule book.
I’d be interested to see which major companies show any interest at all. Hopefully bigger ones than Roach Foods Ltd. or Barbers 1833 Cheddar.
February 12, 2018 at 21:39 #1341944Pot Black was a million miles from
Shitouterr Shootout Snooker. It was only best of one frame due to the time constraints of the schedule but it was proper snooker.
For me, snooker started to change forever in 1978, when the amount of time allotted to the game blew up hugely and thereafter the Crucible was plastered all over our screens over 17 days.
This was an era where there was only 3 options for your viewing pleasure. It was either get into snooker or face the choice of BBC 1 or ITV for a fortnight and Bank Holiday weekend.
Barry Hearn saw the potential in the game, with new players emerging, as the old closed shop fuddy duddies began to fade and the black and white game burst into glorious technicolour.
Back in the day you could not become a professional without the permission of professionals of the day. If John Pullman, Fred Davis, Ray Reardon etc didn’t want you in, you didn’t get in.
Alex Higgins was the first to come on the scene and rattle the cages of the old mob. He would break the mould by conceding frames when it was not his shot. Something never seen before and regarded poor form.
During the 1980’s snooker hit it’s peak for viewing figures with the Taylor/Davis last frame black ball decider, with more than 18 million viewers tuning in. That figure will never be approached, with so many other distractions available through SKY TV and the Internet these days.
Pot Black has zero comparison to Shootout Snooker, which seems to be for drunken, pea-brained louts that feel the need to perform the Pink Panther theme tune EVERY time anyone pots the pink, just in case anyone else in the audience also has the memory retention capacity of a goldfish.
What people seem to forget is that F1 and short cricket formats are for top class competitors of the sports. In Horse Racing it is doomed to be for the lower echelons of the sport. It just won’t transfer to the quality end.
It will be more dross, jazzed up as something it isn’t. It holds zero appeal to me.
Will they be going for their own take on the controversial Grid Girls and Darts Walk On Totty with the “Horsey Hos” leading in the competitors?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

What a joke that is with the Grid Girls removal. Can’t imagine that any one of the girls was forced into it. It’s part of our life style and they’re doing it for fun and maybe a bit of cash or just some TV time.
February 12, 2018 at 21:50 #1341949It’s very encouraging, and also reassuring that the majority see this as a bad idea.
There seems little further for me to add, Flyers Nap summed it up nicely.
It’s a ‘rancid idea’
February 12, 2018 at 22:04 #1341950The T20 Cricket was designed for the county game because the crowds consisted of the attendance of one man and his dog woof. Horse Racing has no trouble in getting people through the gates so what exactly is the problem with horse racing in this need for change.?

I don’t think that this proposal is as much about racegoers as television rights. My suspicion is that Sky will throw lots of money at it and use it to launch Sky Racing, to replace ATR.
February 12, 2018 at 22:20 #1341954Very few of those who think it’s a very bad idea seem to be able to say why.
Some don’t even seem to have read what’s proposed.Typical of this stuck in the past forum.
