Glad Star 4-y-old g by Big Shuffle.
He made 75,000 Euros as a yearling, bought by John Ferguson for Darley. Never raced for them and resold to David Chapman for 9,500 gns at Newmarket sales.
He’s run four times to date and it’s a horror story :
12F Southwell 12/12 btn 109 lengths
11F Southwell 12/13 btn 76 lengths
12F Ripon 10/10 btn 95 lengths
10F Redcar Refused to race
After that magnificent string of performances, he has a current handicap mark of 15. He’s entered for the 2M+ handicap at Pontefract on Monday and is likely to get a run, if run is the appropriate word in his case.
I just wonder why Mr Chapman is still bothering?
For all those of us on here with an involvement as owners, at least we know there’s one horse out there we can beat!

October 18, 2007 at 13:17 #120272It obviously a plot – stepping him up in trip after a couple of "disappointing" runs at a trip obviously short of his best!
I see he was dropped 38lbs in the handicap after refusing to race LTO – this could become a new tactic in the armoury of the "beat-the-handicapper" trainers club!

More to the point David, how the hell did he get a rating of 53 after those first 3 runs

October 18, 2007 at 13:25 #120275He was always rated 15, but ran (or stood still) from 38lbs out of the handicap at Redcar.

Oh I see, my apologies and thanks for correcting me

October 18, 2007 at 13:33 #120277Well why did he carry 9-6 LTO when he could have carried less (one of the horses only carried 8-7). Is it cos the jockey put up overweight (with apologies to Miss A Deniel)! I’m confused.
October 18, 2007 at 13:39 #120281I’m sure Donal Nolan’s Taili has ran off an official mark of 10.
October 18, 2007 at 13:41 #120282DB,
No horse is allowed to run in a handicap off a mark of lower than 45, even if it’s rated less than that – the rating is actually only relevant in deciding the order of elimination of the horses when the safety limit is exceeded. So a horse rated 40 and one rated 15 would always carry the same weight, but the 40 rated would have priority in getting a run.
Glad Star had 9-6 as that was the bottom weight for 4-y-olds and up in the Redcar race – the one with 8-7 was a 3-y-old getting the 13 lbs weight for age allowance.

October 18, 2007 at 13:50 #120283Doubtless of David Chapman’s ran off a mark of 23 earlier on in the season which is almost unheard of for a juvenile.
October 18, 2007 at 13:50 #120284In relation to some of his purchases, é75,000 looks a shrewd piece of business by John Ferguson.
October 18, 2007 at 13:55 #120287Thanks Alan
October 18, 2007 at 14:12 #120288GD,
Doubtless is a star by comparison – he’s never even been beaten more than 48 lengths! He was dropped to 16 after his latest defeat, but no longer seems to be in training as he’s not on the list of current Chapman horses on the BHA database.
Quite right about Taili – he’s been dropped to a rating of 5, so he takes the trophy. Donal Nolan also has Howards Dream with a rating of 10.

October 18, 2007 at 14:16 #120290Don’t know who is training the horse since Pat Gilligan retired but Pineapple Poll also has a BHA rating of 15.
October 18, 2007 at 15:04 #120294The amazing thing about Taili is that he has started 17 times and his average SP is 150/1
Also that he is as hopeless over jumps as on the flat.
October 18, 2007 at 15:16 #120296There are currently three horses with offical ratings of 5.
The previously mentioned Taili, Hillside Smoki (trained by Alan Berry) and African Blues (last ran Dec ’06 so may not be in training).
Little Darlin who raced at Leicester on Tuesday has yet to beat a horse in five races and has been refused an official rating – not sure if that makes her the worst!
October 18, 2007 at 16:24 #120308A few weeks with Barney Curley would sort him out.
There was a horse a couple of years ago that won a banded race, can’t remember the name of it, that was more or less the same.
October 18, 2007 at 17:03 #120312Danish Blues is a good one to mention in this context.
Given an official mark of 10 after his three qualifying runs (which grossly flattered him) and went up 53lb after his fourth run!
I once gave a horse a rating of 15 after three runs and was phoned by an irate trainer who demanded "What am I going to tell the owner?".
