only beat the now-139 rated Wins Now by 8L.
Boots has had serious problems with Wins Now since his novice hurdle season so you can hardly knock Tidal Bay for his subsequent decline.
I’d agree with you though, I wouldn’t give Tidal Bay a prayer in the Stayers Hurdle (getting weight yesterday in a mediocre race). Karabak is quickly becoming the forgotten horse and I think he is a knocking e/w bet at the current odds. He is the only one I can see giving the favourite a race.
I’ve always felt that the World Hurdle should have remained the ‘warm up’ race for the Gold Cup, and the fact that it has become a race for horses that have failed over the bigger obstacles reinforces my view. [Not taking anything away from Big Bucks and Tidal Bay, both admirable horses in their own right].
The staying hurdle division leaves me feeling a bit cold too Moe. They can give it a fancy name like the "World Hurdle" at Cheltenham and have it as a feature race on its own day but it still doesn’t have the same prestige as the Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase and the Gold Cup.
We’ve been fortunate in the last few years to have two great stayers in Barracouda and Inglis Drever but they will probably never be considered among the likes of Istabraq, Moscow Flyer, Best Mate, Kauto Star and Denman as the best horses of the past decade. Galmoy won this race twice in the late eighties but I never hear his name mentioned among the great Irish horses of that era.
Big Bucks undoubtedly has a serious engine and buckets of ability but I’d be with the Ted Walsh school of thought on this one – not quick enough for the Champion Hurdle and not a good enough jumper for the Gold Cup. The Stayers Hurdle will always be a consolation prize in my eyes.

Inglis Drever and Baracouda would fall into your same category then!!!!!!!!!! I think Ted Walsh would have been with the dunces in the cabbage patch, alongside you planting tatoes with comments like that!
February 1, 2010 at 11:38 #273393Just a personal opinion TAPK, no need for the abuse. How many Aintree National, Triumph Hurdle or Irish National winners have you trained?!

I wouldn"t abuse you Imperial, you know that! I am actually quite knowledgable on my "Vivaldi"s", "King Teddys" and "Jersey Royals", I have No experience training racehorses, but i know the World hurdle is the number 1 race for 3m hurdlers and deserves more recognition than you and King Ted give it!

Yes, TAPK, it was an insult and perfectly in keeping with the conceited, self-satisfied undertone evident in every single one of your posts.

If that was mediocre race who was missing from the likely World Hurdle field apart from Karabak who reading reports wasn’t even considered in good enough shape to run.
Assuming Big Bucks wins given a reproduction of the Cleeve Hurdle run which three horses are going to finish in front of Tidal Bay? The way you are talking you must have a list of six or seven at least.
February 1, 2010 at 20:29 #273482Saturday’s race was a fairly mediocre affair because this whole division, bar two horses, is fairly mediocre IMO.
I also said I wouldn’t give Tidal Bay a prayer of winning the race – I never said he wouldn’t be outside the top three. I fully expect Big Bucks and Karabak to be the first two home. Tidal Bay may well finish third but it would not surprise me if one of the likes of Mourad, Ebadiyan, Cape Tribulation, Jumbo Rio, Ninetieth Minute or Sentry Duty finished ahead of him. Its a two horse race for me and I think Karabak is the one that stands out at the prices.

I haven’t checked but I suspect that bunch haven’t won a three mile race between them.
February 1, 2010 at 20:38 #273490Maybe not, but it would be no shock to me if one or more of them were to finish ahead of Tidal Bay. If you’ve punted the horse, good luck to you. I hope he does place.
He is not for me though. I simply won’t trust a horse like Tidal Bay that has let me down several times in the past.

A whiff of contradiction there! Thats 2 posts in one day i have to contest i"m afraid Imperial!
February 1, 2010 at 20:50 #273498How exactly TAPK?
Surely a horse can finish third or even second without coming within an asses roar of winning the race.
My opinions on this crop of staying hurdlers have already been discussed at length. I simply said I wouldn’t rule him out of finishing ahead of the rest of a fairly mediocre bunch. I still don’t think he is in the same parish as the two market principals though.
February 1, 2010 at 20:54 #273499Imperial Call….If Tidal Bay let you down in the past (me too) it’s only because he doesn’t like jumping fences, he’s not that good at it but he’s so athletic he never fell despite some shocking blunders…but did you see how much he was enjoying himself on Saturday. It was eveident evry time the camera picked him up
He always gives 100% and as he’s getting older he needs that little bit longer a distance.
I was a decent middle distance runner, a good miler in my teens and early twenties but I was at my peak over three miles in my early 30sFebruary 1, 2010 at 21:01 #273503He let me down over hurdles too CS! I was on at fancy odds the day he appeared reluctant to go by Massinis Maguire at the festival a few years back.
His head carriage has been discussed at length over the years. I can’t warm to it but in fairness to the horse he does seem genuine enough. I’ve always suspected he may have some sort of deep-lying physical or skeletal issue – a bit like Sizing Europe’s reported problem.

There lies your problem, you are holding a grudge against the horse, you are looking at the negatives instead of the positives! the Negative being he cant jump fences for toffee, the positive he can get over hurdles in his inimitable way and his engine is still as tuned as it was 3 years ago! Tidal Bay has won half of all his races,so you have been, shall we say unlucky to have backed him when he loses! I am dissapointed that someone who i would have seated round the Kings table cant see Tidal is a certainty to finish in the 1st 3! Are you sure you are still in the Forpadydeplasterer camp?

Very much so, as I have been from day one since he won his bumper at Galway. He is the one I would pick out as an e/w bet for the Champion Chase. I do however think there are better bets than Tidal Bay in the Stayers. I gather you are on at fairly lofty odds and would like to wish you the best of luck with your bet.
Would you go in again at the current price though?
