I have watched every World/Stayers hurdle since Moyne Royal won in 1973 and if every winner over this time could be brought back to life to race each other in the World Hurdle, I would be backing Big Bucks.
Big Bucks is still improving and has already achieved a rating of 174, I could see him achieving a rating over 180 before he is retired, Paul Nicholls says he is as good as anything in the stable.
Those who think Tidal Bay has any chance of beating him are deluded.

He’s a good horse no doubt, maybe even one of the best WH winners but DORAN’S PRIDE would have eaten him alive, and BROWN LAD or INGLIS DREVER would have my cash on too

I actually agree, said some time ago that I was starting to think he was the best I’d seen. That said he is quirky and I don’t think he’s 100% unbeatable. Yes he’s the best horse but the best horse doesn’t always win.No doubt he’d probably win the race 9 times out of 10 but if he hits a flat spot in the wrong place, takes some time to respond and a horse with speed and guts can pull a few lengths on him then there’s the possibility he may fail to reel them back in time. The only horses that fit that bill IMO are Katchit (who I fear has gone and therefore would not touch) and Tidal Bay.
February 25, 2010 at 10:44 #278996I must say Im a huge fan of big bucks but cant bring myself to back him at his price for cheltenham because racing is racing and anything can happen at cheltenham.
Therefore at 20-1 I’ll have to have a go on Time For Rupert who Ive always been a big fan of and who I also think is improving and where he may not be quite as special as Big Bucks he should give a good run for the e/w money and should pay more for the place than BB pays for a win.
February 25, 2010 at 21:30 #279145Agree with Hard Held but it’s all about opinions and maybe Tidal will have a going day and serve his backers well. Certainly adds something to the race, best of luck all!
Very sporting of you Bucksy, you know as well as anybody that you just cant get a handle on Tidal Bays chances of turning over the favourite and thats whats worrying you! Some of us can see with our own eyes just what his capabilities are, irrelevant of what he beat and by how far,Tidal Bay only did enough to do the job last time,he will have to raise his game again to beat Big Bucks! He will!

Out of interest, why can’t you see Big Bucks winning?
March 1, 2010 at 19:43 #279928I have to agree with you Bulwark, as an e/w bet I think that Time For Rupert is a great bet. I backed him Aintree last year (albeit at 20/1 not the 50/1 SP!) and have followed him since. Granted he shouldn’t get near Big Bucks, but I would think a place is very much a realistic propersition.
March 1, 2010 at 20:11 #279935maybe Tidal will have a going day
If you’ve followed Tidal Bay’s career you’d know he
always
gives 100% even over fences which it was obvious he hated, I can’t think of many more genuine horses
March 1, 2010 at 20:16 #279937I know all about him. 100% is not something I’ve ever used in describing him and never will. By going day I meant running an error-free race without star-gazing and playing "watch me hit this obstacle really hard".
March 1, 2010 at 20:39 #279944It’s Big Bucks for me, but i’ve had a nice e/w bet on Powerstation.

You could be describing Big Bucks there!
