Do they still exist? Or have they been blown away by the uberload of other extraneous information now available to the Billy Bunters?

I do remember the ‘gallop reports’ in the old Life/Chronicle. I was frequently informed that X had “gone well upsides on The Limekilns” and all that sort of baloney, none of which really meant anything to me except to formulate pleasing minds-eye images of benighted mackintosh-wearing cognoscenti hiding in some bushes at five in the morning, peering through their trusty 10x50s.

I do remember every tipster of the 70s and 80s had a whole team of such knowledgeable horsemen at their disposal, filtering out the pigeon-catchers from the dross so you could be confident that today’s selection (odds-on fav in the opening maiden at Catterick) had been burning up the grass.

A bit like Radio 3, it would be a terrible shame if they had all disappeared, even though nobody listens to them any more.

    A sparkling final line, Mike.

Tis said there were no work-watchers left on the gallops one day after the unexposed Nashwan galloped past them. All WWs could be seen dropping binoculars and shedding coats as they ran like Bolt toward the bookies.

He will eventually be entered somewhere on the sly and hack up at odds of 10/1, leaving you feeling cursed and sick with erm…. rage when you look at his profile again.

Just want you to know this now so you can start getting ready to accept your fate and take it on the chin mucker.

Yet another reason why I still lament the demise of Raceform Update, It was posted to my house every weekand inside was a fairly detailed gallop report section.
Can’t say I can remember actually using it to land a coup but I did enjoy reading it.
    :good:
