I need help – and was wondering whether friends on TRF could be the ones to provide it seeing as no-one know racing life better.

I work for a company that produced promotional merchandise. We source items in the Far East – where our head office is based and oversees contact with the factories.

Anyhow, we now, much to my delight are producing promotional merchandise for a betting company. It gives me a great excuse to be on their website – ‘researching’ during the day –

Anyhow, I need to put together a presentation for the week after next with ideas for nexct years gift promotion. In the recent past we have produced umbrella’s, caps and money clips.

My contact wants to use giveaways that they can brand to connect people with their brand. Focused ideally on race days. Ideas that I have discussed are such as, binoculars, sun shades (to be given to cars to stop heat getting in them during the summer meetings) etc and I just wondered if anyone had any great ideas, for a gift that would be of use (and kept) by the race goer.

I have a few ideas listed but thought, hey, who goes to more meetings then people on this forum – so any ideas welcome. (I.e. just want to think of ideas that could be of use rather then a key chain which is given and binned!).

It’s cheeky to ask – as lets face it, its my job to think of the ideas – but all ideas welcome.

As a gambling company how about something gambling related like a pack of playing cards or poker dice?

Mini binoculars are a good idea but only if you can afford decent ones.

As a joke how about a silver pin – for making your selections….

  Adrian – I’ll need to borrow your pin for next Sunday

How about a nice real leather wallet? I get one each year from Hong Kong! And I have a lovely one from Dubai. Also watches – cool things to have (I am a bit of watch aficionado though :? ) :D

I’ve always felt like a nice mug, myself.

How about a small laminate card with useful numbers on it.

    Examples:
Rule 4 deductions on one side
Field Book percentages on the other (or) a table showing fractional prices as decimals – especially at the short end of the market.

If it came in a nice small wallet all the better ("to keep your betting money separate at the races").

The better quality the gift the company can afford the better – they, last longer and therefore more chance the client will remember the name.

Computer mouse & wrist mats are always a good bet in this computer age.

Best freebies I’ve had for a while were my ‘Fantastic Light’ matches (very useful, even for a non-smoker) and a packet of ‘Diktats’ – little mints in a tic-tac style box. Witty, useable, memorable.

Would depend whether you were going for winter or summer racing, but hip-flasks and/or individual drinks coolers could be appropriate.

Hope we’re all going to get freebies out of your market research!

Thanks everyone for all ideas thus far.

I promise, if an idea is selected I will get some samples for me and try and distribute to people who contribute!! Though how I get these to people will need to be worked out.

In regards to some of the ideas –

Playing cards/ poker dice – is a possibility but more focused on ‘gaming’ then enlightening the race going experience.

Agreed the binoculars is a tricky one. You don’t want to hand out low quality items so imagine if we do these it will be high quality (low volume) for their premium packs (for hospatality rather then the average race goer)

Love the silver pin idea. They love an ‘wacky’ concepts – so anyone have any others then that would be great.

Nice leather weallet – good idea.We put forward a tacky polyester thing last year. Will go for the high class option this time.

The laminate card idea is great in one sense – i.e. focused at the race goer.only problem – is that there is not much ‘fun’ value to it.Putting such an item inside another gift is good though.

Computer ideas are always good – especially as the internet is a big part of their business.

The problem with matches is that they are so associtaed with smoking – which is the only sin in the world viewed below gambling!! (Well it feels that way anyhow)

Drinks ideas are good – a nice hip flask could be liked.

Thanks all ideas – keep them coming!! :D

One of the most useful company gifts I have received is a keychain with a flash memory (company name and logo printed on it). I still use it to this day and isn’t something one would consider disposable.

You can also get laminate cards containing a lens for reading small print which is useful for those of us with limited ‘lamp-oil’. Only difficulty is it comes in various strengths +1.0 up to +3.0. Very useful for those who get tired of removing reading glasses when looking up from the racing pages.

I believe the Far East countries have a high proportion of people who are long-sighted and need reading aids.

Ex Seagull and one time England footballer Steve Foster went into providing small cushions for his clients customers to sit on at football grounds.

The money came from the advertising logos on the cushions.
