Certainly not having a go at Hen, but IIRC she did have a very very definite plan at the start of every season which she stuck to as best she could.
And WoA will never win 9 Grade 1s, because he’ll never get his ground that many times in his career.
Which makes you wonder why the invariably good (or faster) ground Cheltenham Gold Cup is the acid test…

On the other hand certain horses (Desert Orchid great example) certainly gave the impression they liked winning..
I thnk AP covers this pretty well in one of his books
As for WOA, i wonder if some of those who were screaming that Best Mate "had to run in and win the Hennessey" are the same as those backing WOA’s "masterplan"? ;)
Reet
Understand the timing of a campaign but Kempton was clearly a viable alternative.

There were actually very few of those, instead people just wanted to see the horse run more than 3 times. Thankfully in both Kauto Star and War Of Attrition we have connections that will campaign their horses thoroughly.
December 29, 2006 at 18:48 #34726Its a good question but it worked last year and like the saying goes why change a winning combination.
December 29, 2006 at 18:51 #34727Clivex
Any decent trainer with a target for a horse will also have a plan of how to get there. Yesterday’s race was undoubtedly more part of the plan than the actual target for at least half of the field, imo, the going being incidental.
So if it had been good to firm, (bit unlikely) Alner would have run the Listener then?
According to the trainer, The Listener ran yesterday, rather than in the King George, because he was more likely to get his ground in Ireland. Even he "Didn’t expect to beat Beef or Salmon in his own back yard", which suggests place money would have been adequate at this stage?
December 29, 2006 at 21:04 #34729War Of Attrition has contested 3 Grade 1’s this year…bar going for the King George….how else could he be campaigned that would make it more "ambitious"?
December 29, 2006 at 21:16 #34730Betfair Route….3 miles in a slog at Haydock is different to running in Ireland on soft ground…how?
December 29, 2006 at 23:59 #34731Maybe the owner is having his say here…
Busy man and doesnt want to catch one of his poxy flights to the UK :)
December 30, 2006 at 03:31 #34732Certainly doesn’t need a million quid from Betfair.
December 30, 2006 at 05:57 #34733Come the day come the man…Mouse is the shrewdest around and have faith in him….We will bring back all our own cups from last year..Ch CC GC…. Probably the Cross country, bumper and novice hurdle..We might include the Stayers and Arkle just cos we want to……

God only knows what that statement is based on. I’m not suggesting he’s a bad trainer, but he’s no better than most at placing his horses.

Is this a football or racing forum?
December 30, 2006 at 11:39 #34736I like mouse Morris…but an 11% strike rate over past 5 seasons makes him "the shrewdest"?
Very valid point too is that if the owners airline flew WOA across, strong chance they would lose him on the way :o
