Pulled up injured in the 2:05 at Carlisle today. This favourite struggled and was pushed along about four furlongs from home. Something was clearly amiss from the early part of the race.

    May she rest in peace

“Something was clearly amiss from the early part of the race.”

I’m sorry, but you talk some absolute garbage at times, total drivel. Your insinuation that there was anything untoward in the fillies demise in this race is pure fantasy on your part.

It was an injury that could happen to any horse, in any race.

You’re like one of those conspiracy theorists, always looking for something that isn’t there.

Maybe it’s good that some racing fans don’t just have an attitude of ‘ they’re horses, it happens’. I think your attitude is disrespectful to the horses griff and I wish you’d keep them away from what is meant to be a recognition of a horses life.

Griff, just away from my threads and also from this section. The filly wasn’t 100% right as she felt unhappy from the off.

Stop that conspiracy nonsense and stick to baseball or so.

    No Moehat, you’re incorrect.

I’m not disrespectful of horses, far from it, however I am realistic about racing horses and the implications of doing so.

I NEVER comment in the negative about a horse, regardless of their lack of ability or poor breeding, but in response to the nonsense spouted by the poster.

My point is not about the horse in question. She came out of the stalls better than some, was put in the race, travelled much the same as the others around her and when she came under pressure was given one smack and when there was no response, shown a couple of flicks and not ridden when it was obvious that she had no more to give.

This, “Something was clearly amiss from the early part of the race.” is my issue, not the horse.

While I understand your comment, “I wish you’d keep them away from what is meant to be a recognition of a horses life.”, my response is that I probably wouldn’t comment in this section at all if it wasn’t for some of the stupid comments being made.

When a horse that I particularly like dies, I don’t feel any need whatsoever to come on here and comment, but respect the fact that for some reason others do.

By all means use this section for all the RIP’s or fond memories, but as pointed out before, if somebody wishes to put forward an opinion in this section, regardless of how inaccurate, then it’s open to response.

She was pushed along with about four furlongs to go and was never really traveling. At the three furlong pole she was about four lengths behind the leaders and from there on she was out of contention, no matter if she had suffered an injury or not.

I’m not disputing that, it was a disappointing run, especially as an 11/10 favourite.

My issue is with your baseless insinuation, “Something was clearly amiss from the early part of the race.”

There could be any number of reasons and we see similar runs day in, day out.

It’s just a suggestion, but in future, why not simply note the demise of the horse if you’re into that sort of thing and keep any comments to yourself.
As Moehat points out, this section should be to pay respects and acknowledge the loss of a horse, not evaluate their running, criticize jockeys/trainers/owners/ground/paths/summer racing or critic frame by frame their fatality.

Griff you really cannot come onto Forum and tell someone to keep their comments to themselves..you certainly don’t and Ruby has always been passionate about horse welfare and I respect that.

To be arguing on a Thread dedicated to the memory of a dead horse IS disrespectful and Moe is right.

If you are someone who doesnt like to show emotion then I can respect that but why do you come here of all places.
We write our comments from the heart and all observations are welcome although I’m against watching replays for analysis.

Close the door quietly as you leave Griff..we’re changing the locks. 🔒

Thanks Jac, you clearly understand me better than some other forumites. It wasn’t my intention to blame anyone for the horse’s injury. Karl Burke is maybe the best trainer in Europe when it comes to 2-year olds. He clearly knows when to run them and this incident was just very unlucky. I only pointed out that she struggled early as did the commentator on the course. There is no need to be attacked for that…..

It’s sad to see that another one of these memorial threads has ended up with a number of heated comments being made.

The initial post here stated that there was something clearly amiss with Winter Solace from an early stage in the race. Maybe it is not what was intended, but this could easily be interpreted to mean that the jockey should have pulled up sooner and was responsible for the horse’s sad demise.

Regardless of what was meant, the comment was a form of analysis and opinion, and therefore invited further discussion. It’s fair to say that Griff’s responses can sometimes be rather combative, but I suspect that this is in part out of frustration that he keeps being told that this section is not the place for debate, yet other views seem to be allowed to be stated without challenge.

Some of the observations made have the potential to paint racing and the deceased horse’s connections in a very poor light, so I think it is entirely fair that respectful debate occurs when this is the case.

    RIP Winter Solace

I didn’t think your post warranted such a verbal attack Ruby.

It was stated that Winter Solace ran green and lost her action and was quickly pulled up I’m sure they did all they could to save her.

It was perfectly reasonable for you to comment as you did and I saw no blame being cast on her jockey.

Just a baby and so beautifully bred.
    RIP Winter Solace 🌹

Yet another 2 year old dying on its debut. We all understand the risks of the sport but this is happening far too often. It’s not jumping accidents or over-racing. Horses have evolved to run and if they break down without any obvious cause, it can only be breeding and/or training methods. Neither seem to be under scrutiny though.

Perhaps we need a separate thread to vent spleens about fatalities as it’s always likely to provoke heated discussions and, as others have said, this is a place for respectful memorials. R.I.P. Winter Solace.

The idea of keeping analysis of fatalities to a separate thread has been suggested before Tonge. It’s a nice idea, though I fear that getting posters to refrain from analysing and giving opinions in the Memorials section is likely to be quite challenging.

As soon as one person gives an opinion, then it opens up a right to respond, especially where the initial comments are contentious. I can’t see any easy solutions to this, especially without it ending up being onerous for admin.

Personally I don’t mind discussions relating to deaths taking place in this section. I just wish posters kept in mind that the bereaved connections may be reading the comments, so anything that could imply blame needs to be considered really, really carefully. I also wish that posters didn’t make inflammatory comments that are unbefitting of a Memorials section when disagreeing with each other. There have been a number in this thread on both sides of the debate.

I’d rather question how a horse came to lose its life and get it wrong than not question it at all. If we do that we’ll never improve racing safety.

“I only pointed out that she struggled early as did the commentator on the course. There is no need to be attacked for that…..”

No, you stated that, “Something was clearly amiss from the early part of the race.”

What evidence do you have to support that?

If I may respond to some of your many points Triptych.

“It was stated that Winter Solace ran green and lost her action and was quickly pulled up”

That is the RP report, with the race commentary mentioning that she was being nudged along, struggling a bit and not picking up. My issue is in regard to the above, not the RP report.

“To be arguing on a Thread dedicated to the memory of a dead horse IS disrespectful and Moe is right.”

If that is the case, then people should treat it as such and not pass judgement or opinion, simply make a notification, post some fond memories of the horse or races and a RIP if that’s what they feel they need to do.

“Close the door quietly as you leave Griff..we’re changing the locks.”

That’s somewhat of a dictatorial approach if I may say so.
With all due respect Triptych, I don’t believe it is your position to decide who and who does not post in this section. It may be considered by some to be ‘their’ section, where they can wallow in the loss of each horse as though it was their own family pet, but the section is open to all. I’ve not been rude or insulting to anybody, I’ve been respectful of opinions that differ from my own and I’ve made my case where opinions oppose.

“Griff you really cannot come onto Forum and tell someone to keep their comments to themselves.”
(And there you are hoping to deny me access!!)

Well, I think you should post the whole sentence for context.
I wrote, “It’s just a suggestion, but in future, why not simply note the demise of the horse if you’re into that sort of thing and keep any comments to yourself.”

If that advice had been taken, then we wouldn’t be having this discussion, would we?

Griff..I am not going to be the one trampling over this horses memorial you have made a good job of it yourself and as Marlingford rightly said connections of the dead horse could be reading this Thread and to them I apologise.

The ‘close the door quietly’ comment was actually trying to say ‘let’s leave it there in a suttle way not dictatorial at all..that’s not me and that is my final comment on this subject as it’s upsetting.
