Has there ever been a meeting with as few runners before? 26 runners over 7 races.. From a punting point of view the card was an embarrassment…
April 23, 2017 at 20:15 #1298058Thing that annoys me is that all winter trainers complain about wanting better ground yet when they get it you see horses either not being declared or being withdraw due to the ground – can’t win either way.
Festivals at Cheltenham and Aintree bang on about starting on good to soft ground and not having quick ground because of horse welfare and yet we get other jump meetings with firm in the going description – I understand that you have to produce safe ground but if good to firm ground really is a welfare issue why don’t all tracks water to ensure that isn’t the case and why do we continue to have summer jump racing in the first place?
April 23, 2017 at 22:05 #1298064Yes, a very poor meeting largely due to the prevailing very dry meteorological conditions. We would normally have had more rain but the courses cannot be expected to guess on the weather when they bid for the fixtures. The good to firm going had been watered but I sympathize with those not wanting to take a chance. April is not summer jumping and much of the country will be experiencing single figure temperatures in the coming days

A poor meeting for Nicholls and Sam Twiston Davis as well.

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
April 25, 2017 at 13:26 #1298209I was at that 1995 meeting at Perth. There were more runners in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon than there were at Perth.
But they still had 4500 people through the gates.
May 3, 2017 at 17:18 #1299281I’ve a feeling I was at one of those Devon & Exeter meetings. If not any of those particular ones from 1990, I do recall a meeting there around that time where the fifth race was a walkover and the sixth a two-horse race which gives me my username.
Would love to see the cards from all of those fixtures listed above.
