Maybe premature and maybe nothing as he is still showing a 16% strike rate but the last couple of days his horses have run poorly and below form.
Matbe he as a bug in the yard maybe not but well worth a watching brief.August 31, 2018 at 10:51 #1365761Up to the last couple of weeks Mullins has imo started the season better than generally does, but I agree Droffats – form seems to have dropped recently. Just one winner in his last 25 runners beginning with Stratum in the Ebor. Including three odds-on shots and many short odds-against. Plenty of seconds but you should expect more winners at the odds. Probably looks even worse because Gordon Elliott is in such good form.
Value Is EverythingAugust 31, 2018 at 11:06 #1365772Yep i’d agree- Pakora was certainly a shock to me.
The other recent one Listen Dear was a shock pre-race, but not so much after the first fence….she needs to run from the front at all times, and if you watch the race back, she had no chance of being allowed to do that.
Bumper horse on the same card on Tuesday looks like it was just beaten by a very good mare, as there was some gamble and a good booking of Codd. Trainer actually said she works better than Peregrine Run, must be looking a sale!
Personally, i think in general (the figures may tell a different story) that WPM has started fairly normal, he tends to have a decent set of summer horses due to the size of the stable, and in recent times, a very strong Galway. It’s about now, he slows up for a bit, whilst his proper Winter horses get fit and start to appear- and normally Elliot starts faster at this stage.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!September 1, 2018 at 00:16 #1366835Stewards report says Pakora lame post race.
September 1, 2018 at 11:45 #1367126To be fair some of the horses he has been running over the last couple of weeks are relatively rubbish. The only horses that really disappointed were Listen Dear and Pakora. Listen Dear is only back from a long injury layoff and Pakora was lame. The rest of his runners, the likes of kolumbus, bang bang Rosie, uradel, hey little boy, lareena, Orion daubrelle, makitorix, jonnigraig, steel wave are all among the worst horses in his yard.
September 4, 2018 at 15:34 #1370438He usually goes quiet this time of year; you can expect on average that his big guns will run once, if at all, before the Xmas meetings. Elliot usually gets 2 and sometimes 3 runs into his better horses before Xmas. Mullins didn’t even contest the JWINE last year which is a 140K Grade 1.
September 6, 2018 at 20:56 #1371688He is currently running at 11% success rate for the last 14 days (4 wins from 36 runs) which is poor for him.
His first runner since the 31 August runs tomorrow in the Bumper. Be interesting market confidence and how the horse runs.
Maybe a bug in the yard. We will see.September 13, 2018 at 13:46 #1373782I see Listen Dear is due to be racing tomorrow at Listowel
His last run certainly wasn’t him at allGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
December 4, 2018 at 23:40 #1388042Am I the only one who thinks something isn’t right? A lot of horses underperforming.
The other thing of concern to me is he has a seriously high number of novice chasers and maiden hurdlers who haven’t raced yet this season. Its looking unlikely that he’ll get the opportunity to run many prior to Christmas festival’s now. Chasers Real steel, battleford, ballyward, bleu berry, cilaos emery, burrows saint, getabird, duc de genivre, next destination, couqin mans are all entered in grade one chases at Christmas but haven’t even ran in a beginners yet. The firm ground until recently looks like it will have an impact on the experience and preparedness of many top horses heading into Christmas and the spring.
I’m sure many other yards are in the same boat, I’m just most familiar with his
December 4, 2018 at 23:52 #1388043Wouldnt say there underperforming, Id say his strike rate is low because of who hes had running and mob handed in races with poor animals, nothing to do with the yard, quick grabim flew home in a grade 1 and is arguably the best horse hes had out yet and hes not likely top 15 in the yard, doubt horses would be winning in thag fashion if the yard was under a clous
Elliot and mullins (more so elliot) are really taking the spring festivals into all race planning, its likely we will see this in years to come that they start appearing later and later until elliot cracks the title for that year, id say the ground is the main reason we havent seen alot of the big guns out but id so say there both dialled in for fairyhouse and punchestown, gordons had a habit of overdoing his horses by the spring and hasnt much ammunition left by that time, id say hes making sure he doesnt make that mistake this season again, willie will notice that and play to that
Just a thought.
December 5, 2018 at 07:37 #1388049I think he did say at the start of the season “Mine are always late out snd they’re going to be even later this year”
As well as the English and Irish spring festivals, he always keeps a few going for the big French races in late spring/ early summer so maybe that’s in mind too.
December 5, 2018 at 08:45 #1388051Mullins is still running a lot of his lower level horses in a lot of races as the ground is still good for them.
Many of his Winter horses that have run have probably needed the run as they haven’t had enough work due to the ground staying better later in the year.
Mullins is 500k ahead of Elliot in the trainer’s championship- i don’t have last year’s figures at hand but i’d guess he wasn’t that far ahead, if ahead at all on the 5/12/2017?
I wouldn’t say stable form is a worry, i’d say its a UK-wide problem. It does however pose the question about how ready and experienced some of these horses will be come Leopardstown in February and even Cheltenham in March!

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!December 28, 2018 at 14:35 #1390521I think I was right in early December. Apart from Quick Grabim, Un de Sceaux and Aramon you can’t point to any great performances from this yard recently. Hardly able to win a maiden hurdle, and hasn’t won a bumper since Westport lady won the worst bumper run in Ireland this season on november 26th
December 28, 2018 at 15:24 #1390539Quick Grabim, Aramon and now Kemboy were all properly race fit and I think UDS basically trains himself.
I wonder how Melon will get on tomorrow; true he has won first time out the last two seasons…but they were not strong races. On the bonus side he gets his ground and if he was nearly thereabouts fitness-wise around the time of the Hatton’s Grace he might be ready to go alright. - AuthorPosts
