Can’t we get Roger Cook to pop round and see what’s been going on?

It’s certainly a thread that’s created interest, but it’s based on an impression, not statistics.
How many horses has Mullins trained, what percentage have sustained an injury, where’s the evidence he’s any harder, or less hard, on his horses than any other trainer?
I don’t actually find Mullins a very interesting subject generally.
Like Gordon Elliott, he gets given huge resources to work with, so it’s inevitable he will have a lot of everything, from Grade 1 wins to injured horses.
The same applies to Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls in England.

It’s no worse than the Constitution Hill one. ;o)

This….
I also do remember reading something about a lot of the horses Kirk and CO buy not fitting the “mould” typical buyers buy, ie, they don’t necessarily standout as a model or have that walk lots desire. Perhaps that’s some minor reason as to why. Don’t think there’s really anything to see here, as FF91 says, the more horses he has in the spotlight the more noticeable it is.

I do. Jack makes an interesting point. Mullins (well Kirk and Boulard probably) seem to buy a wider range of shapes and sizes of horses and they don’t always spend top dollar on everything. I read that they’d had their eye on Al Boum Photo for a while and tried and failed to buy him before they finally got him. He was unsold at £70k as a 3 year old so they obviously don’t go bonkers and just keep bidding on everything they want. GingerTipster would use them (and Shark Hanlon!) as buyers- they get the value. Why did they want him? Unraced, not fashionable sire, not much to look at (Henrietta Knight wrinkled her nose when talking about him). Some of those little AQPS horses with their weird trotter-type heads that are too big for their bodies, like Un de Sceaux, turn out to be stars as well.
Elliott buys himself and seems to have a type- beautiful conformation with plenty of substance but a lot of them turn out to be a bit slow; Henderson’s are tall and elegant and wouldn’t look out of place in a show hunter class. Nicholls’ are a little plainer but usually you can still spot which are his even without the cross noseband. Mullins’ are all sorts.
I would love to know the average return on investment (or realistically, who loses the least) in money spent on a horse vs money won by that horse over their career for each trainer. Shark Hanlon has to be near the top of the tree but I would think, of the top echelon, Mullins is not far off.
