Timeform radio reporting both fatally injured at Fairyhouse. Sad news and a tough month for Johnjo indeed. Wichita wont be forgotten in a hurry.
April 13, 2009 at 19:43 #221683Certainly puts a big black cloud over the race.
It looked as though Drumconvis had got back on his feet.
With Wichita we will never get to see him fulfil his full potential.
The sort of day that makes your stomach knot.
RIP to them both.
April 13, 2009 at 19:51 #221686Just put a Wichita thread in the memorials.
Really sad news, I loved watching this horse.
From it’s superb effort at Chepstow right through to being there in person to see this amazing horse win at Cheltenham it’s been a fantastic journey.
I was really looking forward to seeing this one being stepped up to the Gold Cup next year.
Really sad news
RIP matey
April 13, 2009 at 19:54 #221687Also noticed a horse jumping the last fence which almost landed on a stricken horse that had only just got to it’s feet; did I imagine it?
April 13, 2009 at 21:33 #221714No moehat, that didn’t happen. Drumconvis struggled to his feet just as the field by-passed the last fence but sadly it was only too obvious that he had sustained a fracture. A grim renewal of the Irish National which not many racing folk will look back on with any pleasure. But congratulations must go to Bob Buckler, a much under-rated trainer.
April 13, 2009 at 21:37 #221716I havent had a bet in 5-6 weeks but i still love national hunt racing and check the forums for your guys opinions….
After another two horses dying today, one in the National and the worst one of them all shown live on the BBC in he FOXHUNTERS a horse called MEL IN BLUE laid stricken on the turf and by no fault of its own another horse jumps the fence and stands on the horses head….it looked terrible.
I question myself am i a cruel b a s t a r d for enjoying this sport???
What other animal would you be allowed to flog with a whip for the public to bet on????
I also question is the sport exceptable in this day and age?
Dont get me wrong i love jump racing but i have serious doubts for the future, ive been lucky enough to work in the racing industry as a work rider and still when time allows go down and help in the yard these animals are beautiful sensitive animals they really dont desreve this.
The argument will be oh they could have died on the gallops or in there box which is correct and im not clever enough to have an answer.
April 13, 2009 at 21:51 #221718It is very sad but dont be so hasty Ghost!
These things will always happen, such is the nature of horse racing, and indeed life itself. Its just unfortunate that it tends to happen more in big races at big meetings, or maybe they just get more coverage. I always think these incidents are like buses. Everything is fine, very few fatalities for a few months and then bang…you get 2 or 3 in one day (or one race).
All you can do is offer condolences to the connections of the fatalities and hope these incidents remain few and far between.
April 13, 2009 at 22:02 #221723Doug here what your saying but still doesnt make it right.
April 13, 2009 at 22:13 #221731Not saying its right Ghost, but there would be a helluva lot of people (and horses) out of work if NH racing was banned. Then again a 4m flat race round a wet Uttoxeter could be fun…in a novelty kind of way, lol!
I can see you are battling with your conscience!
April 13, 2009 at 23:52 #221743Sad end to the race and real commiserations to connections of two nice horses. Took the shine off a great performance by Niche Market and his connections. Tony Martin has had no luck in the IN, follows on from losing Xenophon 3 years or so ago.
April 14, 2009 at 00:56 #221747Anyone who has ever seen the picture of Jonjo in tears cradling Alverton’s head in his arms know how badly he will take this. No one knows the risks more than him but it doesn’t soften the blow when you lose a horse you have grown very fond of.
Wichita Lineman like Exotic Dancer were star members of the family at Jackdaw and the staff will be gutted having lost their best two chasers in less than a month.
Heart goes out to them all.

Must admit they were both favourites of mine – how on earth the staff and all concerned must be feeling, who knows? For the 2nd time in 10 days, as well, and to lose any horse must be gut wrenching, but for the 2 best horses to have died – it just doesn’t bear thinking about.
April 14, 2009 at 01:34 #221752Has Emma Jane been injured also?
April 14, 2009 at 02:49 #221769Very tough on Tony Martin losing two of potentially his best horses after Clarified was also killed at Cheltenham- he thought an awful lot of both of them.
The high profile coups and big wins get all the publicity, this is the dark side.April 14, 2009 at 02:54 #221770Has Emma Jane been injured also?
Yes, split a pastern… quote : Willie Mullins said: "She’s going to the veterinary hospital but should be okay given time."
April 14, 2009 at 03:02 #221772Thanks for that; glad she’ll be ok.
April 14, 2009 at 13:12 #221779I have only just seen this.
Awful news.
