‘John Egan, the rider of BILLY ONE PUNCH, reported that the gelding was eased as the jockey had pulled a muscle.’

    Hmmmmm

It’s a new one, but it’s also a perfectly legitimate reason (not saying that anone has said it isn’t).

You don’t just need a fit horse, you need a fit jockey, and if the pilot pulls a vital muscle then that can bring him to a halt quite rapidly. I’m sure you’ve seen footballers pull muscles, where they go from running flat out to motionless immediately – unfortunately, that’s what pulled muscles can do to you lol.

It would be so much more funny if it stated ‘love muscle’.

    MM,

Do your footballers that pull a muscle turn out for seven more games the next day?

    MM,

That’s a bit of a far fetched comparison AP isn’t it  . The answer is no, because 7 more games is 630 minutes worth of physical effort – though with 24 hours of treatment behind them, and depending on the seriousness of the pulled muscle, they could reasonable be expected to put in 15 minutes worth of physical effort – which is the same length of time that Egan would have taken to ride 7 races.

All I was eluding too was that if anyone has pulled a muscle then they will know the instant pain it can cause – they might be as fit as a fiddle 10 minutes later, but at the time it happens it can be sometimes physically impossible to continue what you were doing.

If John Egan says he pulled a muscle then the guy pulled a muscle and had to halt his effort – I don’t see any reason why anyone should question his explanation for easing the horse  (again, i’m not saying anyone has questioned his explanation).

After Petite Etoile had been sensationally beaten by Aggressor in the King George, Piggott’s excuse for her sub-par run was, "I think they cut the grass the wrong way".

People often confuse the phrase ‘pulled muscle’ with something far less painful – maybe a twinge or sharp pain whilst exercising – and as such Alan’s analogy is perfectly valid.

A pulled muscle, in the true sense of the phrase, is a torn muscle, though the degree of tear can vary from slight to severe. Such an injury requires immediate treatment and, most importantly, rest. There is no way Egan could ride to maximum effect the following week, let alone the following day, whilst harbouring such an ailment.

Stewards calling John Egan…John Egan to the stewards’ room please.

With all due respect LGR this is a load of rubbish. A pulled muscle is a torn musle  – where the hell did you get that from?

What you really should have said is that a pulled muscle can vary from slight to severe, meaning a quick to delayed recovery, whereas a torn muscle without doubt means a long spell on the sidelines.

For your informatin, Paul Radcliffe pulled a muscle during her World Record Boston Marathon run, Dean Macey had a few pulled muscles during his World Athletics decathlon events – but they were able to carry on.

So much for them needing a rest

I will say it again, a pulled muscle can last for a few minutes, and you can be as fit as a fiddle soon after, but when the muscle pulls, it is impossible to continue what you are doing. If you do pull a muscle one day, it is perfectly normal to be fit the next day, next hour, or even next minute, as Paul Radcliffe and Dean Macey have proved.

If John Egan says he eased an horse because he pulled a muscle then why not believe him? Does every jockey excuse have to turn into an enquiry.

I can’t type anymore because I have just pulled a muscle in my finger – seriously, before you laugh, I have to stop typing, but I promise that I will be back within 10 minutes – unless LGR’s opinion that my pulled muscle is a tear, and needs a weeks rest is accurate

And LGR, if my post sounds disrespectful to you then I apologise. I spent 3 years at Stockport County as a physiopherapist in the early 90’s, and I do voluntary physio work at Billingham Synthonia to this day – believe me, there is a difference between a pulled and a torn muscle.
