Interesting stuff, Titus. I wonder if the closer a son/daughter resembles its father – colour, conformation, character, the better chance it has of being as successful? I know little about breeding or indeed the science of genetics but might it be that in the true lookalike the sire’s genes have been ultra-dominant?
October 23, 2016 at 21:13 #1268397@titusOates, there really is no correlation between racing ability and coat colour. Of course, you’ll get outliers in any distribution, but it’s misleading to pick a few examples and generalise from them.
Heterozygous bays like Mill Reef and Northern Dancer will pass on the chestnut gene 50% of the time, but the mare contributes 50% as well. There’s no evidence to suggest that when a bay mare passes on the chestnut gene rather than the bay one when the bay sire passes on the chestnut gene, then the transference of the most desirable “ability genes” (for want of a better expression) from the stallion will be inhibited in some way. Also, many of the bay offspring of those two stallions will have received a chestnut gene from the stallion.
Just to correct what you wrote about Darshaan, he was a homozygous bay, so couldn’t sire a chestnut.
On why there are fewer chestnuts about than there were, some of the most influential stallions at the end of the last century, such as Sadler’s Wells, Danehill, Danzig, have happened to be homozygous bays. But now, we’ve got such stars as Galileo, Dubawi and Frankel, all heterozygous bays, plus Tapit, a chestnut under his grey patina.
October 23, 2016 at 21:17 #1268398Any further news on Mi Suerte? Arguably the most impressive début of any Frankel offspring so far.
Apparently there is a Group 3 on 5th November and then a Group 1 in December if all goes well.

October 23, 2016 at 21:27 #1268399Interesting topic Titus.
Things have moved on since 1958 but in his book ‘Breeding The Racehorse’ the great Italian breeder Federico Tesio discusses, in chapter six, the ‘Independence of Inherited Characters’.
He starts by asserting that ‘In hybrid animals, even if highly selected, each separate character is passed on independently.’
He tells us a few paragraphs later that Mohammed, no less, had declared “If they tell you that a horse flew, they are speaking of a chestnut.”
This followed a little tale of an Arab boy and an old man being pursued by some Bedouins who were looking for blood. The boy reported that a chestnut horse was leading the chase. ‘The chestnut is fast but he will soon tire’ said the man. Later a grey was now the closest pursuer. ‘Never fear, he too will tire.’ ‘Now a bay horse has taken the lead.’ ‘In that case, let us commit our souls to Allah’ the old man cried. But Tesio confidently rebuffs those theories, showing that between 1777 to 1938 English classic winners had coat colours in the same proportion, more or less, to the numbers of those horses in the general population.
More recent works would seem to suggest this is still the case – http://www.livestockscience.com/article/S1871-1413(06)00283-6/pdf
October 28, 2016 at 00:18 #1268925Just when you thought it was all over for the Season William Haggas runs ELYAASAAT (Lahudood (Singspiel) tomorrow in the 1.20 at Newmarket over 7 furlongs.
This handsome colt is, of course, by Frankel out of Fillies & Mares Breeders Cup Winner Lahudood and William Haggas quoted… He has a great step to him and has every chance of being a star. He was always going to be a back end 2yo and he could be a very exciting 3yo.
Elyaasaat holds a Derby Entry.Just got in at 11/4 on Paddy Power but 3/1 could be available. I think when he is seen in the pre-parade and paddock tomorrow he will go off a warm favourite for this race.
Really looking forward to seeing him as I will be there tomorrow and hoping to get a nice photo of him in the pre-parade or paddock.
Hope he wins and gives us something to think about for next years Classics.Saturday could see AMBROSIA running again in the 1.50 Newmarket.
She was very green last time out and think she will run better on turf than on the standard going that she ran on for her maiden, she was slowly away but did seem to stay on for the final furlong.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...October 28, 2016 at 19:44 #1269069ELYAASAAT was a non runner at the last minute today so now it all rests on AMBROSIA tomorrow in the 1.50 Newmarket.

October 29, 2016 at 01:34 #1269157And Frankuus & Cunco in France on Sunday!
They only have to beat Capri so no pressure LOL
I have taken 7/1 Frankuus and 14/1 Cunco Each Way for my Frankel Flyers Thread in Lays & Plays so
let battle commence.
I’m really rooting for Frankuus to win this.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...November 4, 2016 at 17:54 #1270573Mi Suerte, arguably the most impressive if Frankel’s maiden winners runs tomorrow in the G3 Fantasy Stakes. Will be interesting to see how she goes.

November 5, 2016 at 07:52 #1270703My girl Mi Suerte’s second run, this time in a Group 3. Enjoy!
November 5, 2016 at 07:59 #1270704Very nice indeed from Mi Suerte. She looked green and unbalanced turning in but soon engaged second gear and simply outclassed them.
Thanks again for posting.
November 5, 2016 at 08:04 #1270705I’m guessing her next start will be the Group 1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies in early December, possibly alongside Frankel’s other unbeaten daughter Soul Stirring. Frankel may yet bag his first Group 1 this season.
November 5, 2016 at 08:12 #1270707Seriously impressive!

November 5, 2016 at 08:38 #1270713WOW VERY IMPRESSIVE, WHAT A TURN OF FOOT GREAT STUFF. JOCKEY TOOK THE PISS
November 11, 2016 at 09:47 #1271833Zefferino runs in the 4.15 at Wolverhampton today. He went really well first time out and I thought he looked a horse with great potential. But he was then completely outpaced over 7f last time out so I am a bit worried that he stays at that distance today. I can only imagine he is going to be ridden more aggressively today. He is drifting like a barge so might be worth a pound or two.

November 11, 2016 at 23:43 #1272074Totally missed Zefferino today Joni, wasn’t expecting the Frankel’s to turn out on the AW But have noted that
Frankel’s filly
HARBA (Kirinda) Tiger Hill
..is out for the second time this year to run in the 6.15 at Wolverhampton over 5 furlongs.
She raced keenly last time out and did her best work up to 5 furlongs just running out of steam in the final stages, should be closer tomorrow.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...December 6, 2016 at 20:29 #1275918A couple of interesting Frankel’s running in the next couple of days. Mikey Ready makes his debut for Ed Walker tomorrow. He looks a nice type and is beautifully bred as the dam is a sister to Peeping Fawn. Then on Sunday in Japan Frankel will be looking for his first Group 1 winner as the exciting Soul Stirring runs in the Harshen Fillies.
The Japanese have really taken Frankel to their hearts and bought some very expensive yearlings in the recent sales. I think they will be seeing plenty of his progeny racing there over the next few years. Hopefully some of them will be seen over here.
