I raised the issue because the weather forecast looked unpromising for any play at Old Trafford today. As it happens, it is a brighter morning than expected so I will take my chances on the Manchester rain staying away!
If it had been raining, I would have gone to a race meeting instead had there been one suitable. I know they cannot race at Aintree, Chester and Haydock every day just for me but there are lots of other tracks I could reach comfortably enough in a day. But the 3 afternoon fixtures are about the least convenient imaginable.
Perth is not an option for a day trip. I have visited Musselburgh, Hamilton Park and Ayr on day trips but Perth is too far.
Brighton would involve a long journey via London. Newton Abbot could be reached on a direct service from Birmingham at 9am but that would involve a very early start to get to New Street! The direct return service leaves at 5pm, which would at least be the perfect excuse to miss the dire bumper at 5.35pm!
I know as AP Racing has said the racecourses cannot be made to race but nothing in the Midlands or North (at least until Newcastle this evening) and two fixtures at the most distant racecourses in the country is not exactly helpful!
September 11, 2023 at 09:07 #1662623I’ve a vague memory of Hamilton and Hexham being the sole meetings – probably on a Monday or Tuesday – and rent-a-cockney-wideboy Mark Winstanley mouthing off about it in his Sporting Life column
That must have been 25+ years ago, so bizarre race-planning is nothing new
