Surely if the likes of BMX and Beach Volleyball it should be open house? And before anyone questions athleticism the same could easily said about the shooting events where you do little more than aim at a target.
August 11, 2012 at 10:40 #409496Snooker would probably have integrity issues, given the popularity of the game in China its best chance was 4 years ago. Darts might have had a chance as an exhibition event in London to start the process but I cannot imagine Rio having any willingness to introduce an event with virtually no appeal in the host nation.
Although many events now take place indoors I think they can essentially be done in the open air.August 11, 2012 at 19:21 #409543Not played to sufficiently high standard in enough countries?
Rugby has finally managed to get in as the Sevens version is played at a high enough level by a good deal more countries than 15-a-side.
Beach volleyball would appear to be in to satisfy the voyeur element of the male audience…

August 11, 2012 at 20:40 #409546Platini and Blatter will not allow it

And while we’re at it, Billiards and Pool too.
Curling, Archery, 10m Air Pistol, Synchro Swimming, Tennis, Football, Handball and Water Polo

Too many events that justifications is scarce for, Olympic Cribbage anyone, drinking compulsory?
August 13, 2012 at 14:27 #409658The IOC has added golf and "kite-boarding" (what ever that is) to Rio 2016 events. If darts and snooker was added then it would be an obvious advantage for Team GB, and if darts and snooker was adopted then what’s stopping other sports governing bodies wanting to be an Olympic sport. Syncro swimming and rhythmic gymnasts isn’t sport and shouldn’t be Olympic sports in my opinion it’s arts like ballet or opera.
August 13, 2012 at 17:17 #409679One could argue that there are many games that do not deserve their Olympic status. Equally one could argue that betting on the outcome of Olympic events is far worse.
This Olympiad has shown that women’s football is a game progressing and that men’s football as a spectacle has become complacent and boring.
August 14, 2012 at 01:24 #409724Darts in Rio would be a major addition, a cultural gift from Team GB! Speed of thought to work out those big checkouts. A test of mental agility and nerve and skill with the arrers. What a great exhibition sport Darts would be.
And while we are at it, what about squash?
This really is a sport I’d love to see made Olympic.August 14, 2012 at 08:23 #409736You have to wonder why squash isn’t in it as they already have tennis, badminton and ping pong.
Rugby sevens in the next games for heavens sake, won’t be long till cricket is in it, T20 of course – I don’t think team sports should be in the games, it should be for individual competitiors.
Archery and air gun shooting is in, why not darts?
Curling is in the winter games, why not snooker?
I suppose we just have to accept more and more events being created as each new event will create money.
August 14, 2012 at 09:51 #409742Why no egg and spoon race or sack race, we have been training the kids the art of these at a very young age.
How about that football free-styling as a sport I’m sure Brazil would welcome it. I don’t see it any different to have diving into a pool.
