In National Hunt for years now we’ve had a certain AP McCoy winning title after title, and in my opinion he’s got more horses up that maybe wouldn’t have won without him on top than any other jockey. I don’t think many would disagree when I say he’s the best over jumps.
However on the flat the ‘best’ jockey is not so clear, Hanagan and Moore have won 2 jockeys titles each in the last 5 years with Richard Hughes winning the other. However as I say above it’s not all about winners, how many horses did the above 3 get up that others wouldn’t have won?
So i’ll throw it out there, each jockey gets a horse with the same stamina, speed, determination, etc. They run on a course and ground that all horses are equally effective on. Which Jockey wins?
My personal opinion would be Hanagan, I feel based on all round ability he’d come out on top, with perhaps Moore and Sanders filling the places.
July 14, 2013 at 19:58 #445690I was just thinking about that having read stevecaution’s post about Moviesta/Heaven’s Guest.
No disrespect to Paul Mulrennan but swop the jockeys and you get a different result.Definitely Ryan Moore for me, there have been a number of occasions this season when he has won on horses that most other jockeys wouldn’t have done.
July 14, 2013 at 20:03 #445691It isn’t often I agree with Yeats
…… but if my life depended on a jockey giving a horse a good ride then Ryan Moore would be the man without any hesitation.

It isn’t often I agree with Paul but when you put it like that the thought of Richard Hughes keeping us alive concerns me!
July 14, 2013 at 20:44 #445694I used to be a big Pat Smullen fan but I don’t think he’s been as sharp this season as in other years.
I think Johnny Murtagh showed at Ascot that there’s no better man on the big day, and I’d have himself and Ryan Moore as top of the pile.
Honorable mentions to Kevin Manning and Olivier Peslier.
July 15, 2013 at 05:33 #445708Somewhere on this forum I remember reading " Horses win races, Jockeys lose them"
Ryan Moore seems to be an exception to that rule and I think he’s the best at present.
July 15, 2013 at 06:10 #445709Another vote for Ryan Moore.
Going back to the Moviesta race again…Ryan had Heaven’s Guest stoked up to tackle the uphill finish before PM thought about giving Moviesta a reminder, albeit it that Moviesta was carrying a penalty it could have made the difference.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...July 15, 2013 at 11:53 #445719Murtagh every day for me. Also a fan of Gerald Mosse when he comes over
July 15, 2013 at 12:46 #445723Ryan Moore is probably the best around just now but if you’d backed Ultrasonic at Ponte last week you’d rather Paul Mulrennan had been on board
These things fluctuate during the season with conditions and confidence. Graham Lee been high up there of late imo but then he faced a bit of criticism for Stencive on Saturday.
I can let a jockey off with the odd bad one, its to be expected really.

Yes I agree with that Doug but for as much as I like Graham Lee and he is one of the few honest, sincere, well respected, clean living, modest, humble, genuine,in fact all the good things in a personality of a Gentleman is Graham! Nonetheless he knows he gave
Stencive
a very bad ride and thats allowing him coming from box 21,had ‘Danchai’ not been the same Trainers horse one could forgive him, however it seemed to me Graham was happy to finish 2nd to the 2nd string.Interesting that William Haggas went to great pains to suggest how ‘gutted’ Graham was with the result. Not as gutted as those who knew he was the best horse in the race!
July 15, 2013 at 13:06 #445726Johnny Murtagh, Ireland.
Ryan Moore, GB.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
July 15, 2013 at 13:14 #445728Franny Norton and Jim Crowley would win on the same horses the likes of Hughes and Moore win on and are under rated imo.
Blackbeard to conquer the World
July 15, 2013 at 14:27 #445735Ryan Moore is probably the top professional. Barely makes a mistake. He lacks flair on the other side of the coin.
Johnny Murtagh combines it all for me. Class, professionalism, flair. Even now, when he’s also a trainer and doesn’t get any younger I think he’s simply the best.
Loves Richard Hughes. The way he rides with confidence on horses is amazing. It doesn’t pay always off, but boy if it does it’s spectacular, isn’t it? His ride on Paco Boy in the Lockinge Stakes a couple of years ago is still for me on of the best rides ever. This man has balls of steal.
Underrated in my mind, and I’m always really happy to see them on a horse that I have backed: Graham Gibbons and Franny Norton.
July 15, 2013 at 17:44 #445746Richard Hughes without a shadow of a doubt.
Moore is more restricted in how he rides a horse and favours holding them up late and winning by a nose. Hughes will get the job done
Some jockeys – a few who have been mentioned in this thread already – would make me want to take the whip to them as an owner. Little to no imagination or initiative
Hughes on the flat, Geraghty over jumps.

I’d agree with the above if you swapped the names around!
July 15, 2013 at 20:06 #445753At Ascot Murtagh.Otherwise Moore.

Geraghty on the flat ? ……
Hughes is more versatile than Moore.
Jamie Spencer’s ability to ride horses into trouble on wide open racecourses is a true gift.
