We might have a horse going! Why Be – he won his 20th race tonight from 27 and he’s placed on 5 other times and he’s a Group 1 winner.
He’ll be in the Sprint if he goesOh it’s sooooooooo exciting – I shall be a bundle of nerves on race night if he does
.
November 19, 2007 at 17:00 #125713I’m arriving on Tuesday 4th. Duck gets in before me that weekend (I have to wait until after Horserace Writers Lunch on Monday).
See you for breakfast after track work – I’ll be the one going for the local options – no queues and much tastier!

This is going to be sooooooooooo goodJanuary 3, 2008 at 22:07 #6137Am planning (depending on some of your advice!) a trip to this racecourse in Feb. Firstly, Is it a good course in terms of viewing/facilities etc and can anyone please recommend a good hotel nearby in which to stay?
Many thanks.January 3, 2008 at 23:03 #133237No on both counts.
If you like Thai food I’d recommend the Globe…
“The Globe Hotel is the first and only Thai style hotel in the United Kingdom, a grade II listed building situated in the heart of historic Warwick. The hotel has been dedicated to accommodating travellers for over a century.
The management and the staff at the Globe aims to cater for all of our guests needs, not just in providing facilities. We want you to have an enjoyable stay and return again and again!”

Many thanks.Warwick is my local track and I can confirm the facilities are poor and the viewing not much better. In February it will also be bitingly cold as the wind seems to sweep across the course straight into your face in the stands
January 4, 2008 at 19:28 #133358Ok, stuff that, I’ll find another track during that time Thanks for the warning!!!
January 4, 2008 at 20:36 #133372Oh come on it’s not that bad. It’s friendly, reasonable bars, decent screen. Go up to the top of the stand and you can see 80% of the track, just the bit behind the hill hidden.
It is really cold ‘though, especially at the top of the stand, but you don’t expect Royal Ascot weather at jump meetings anyway, do you?
Look at http://www.tripadvisor.com for some hotel reviews; I live near Warwick so obviously have no experience of local hotels. If you have a car consider Stratford-Upon-Avon; quite close and a few places to go out at night.
Best meeting is Saturday 12th January. Second best 9th February but that does clash with Newbury.
Oh and obviously weather is a threat this time of year. I don’t think they have extensive frost covers, and although the track itself takes rain well it can soffer from water running off the road and waterlogging a part of the course.
January 4, 2008 at 20:36 #133374Tuffers I have to disagree about the viewing at Warwick I think it is very good viewing.
You clearly have never been to Cartmel or Chepstow to name but 2 poor viewing tracks.
I agree with the facilities though at Warwick-not very good.
January 4, 2008 at 20:41 #133377Warwick has gone downhill in my estimations. They have spent £2m on redevelopment which on my most recent visit only seems to benefit the corporate entertainment or dining client. In fact I even wrote to the racecourse on one or two points and got a waffled response that more or less said what I thought – the shareholders come first and the racegoer last. However don’t let me put you off – there are worse courses to visit I’m sure!
January 4, 2008 at 20:41 #133378Might wait for a few more opinions then…Just fancied a night away with Mrs Crizzy (during half term) and whilst we have little in common, she does at least like going racing! (admittedly she would prefer a glass of champagne in the seafood bar at Goodwood, but she can’t have everything Will consider your comments. Thank you.

I’ve been a regular visitor to Chepstow over the years. The facilities aren’t fantastic but I’ve always liked its pre-parade ring

You obviously haven’t had to spend an afternoon in one of Warwick’s single boxes. It’s like having an insight into life in a prison cell. The painted breezeblock walls are a particularly nice touch

Crizzy
I would recommend Newbury (Excellent facilities – Fish and chips washed down with a pint of Hogsback beer a must)
January 5, 2008 at 11:35 #133458Perhaps it depends on what you want and what you enjoy.
I like Warwick myself.
Easy access from town and train station; easy pre-parade and paddock viewing.
Reasonable view of the straight from the stand above the Ring and up that fire-stairs type thing.Reasonable Ring of bookies.
Toilets fair.
Indoor betting not the best, imo.I don’t eat or drink at racetracks, so cannot comment on those.
Town looks a typically English old place with castle, antique shops, undertakers go leor, decent shops, crap shops, and all the usual funny traffic systems.
Sean Rua.
