I knew a guy in the 70’s who was tight as a ducks ass but did 1p forecast doubles on every race, every day.
He swears that he did well doing it. If he was prepared to part with his cash he must have been getting most of it (at least) back.December 13, 2007 at 23:42 #130427I tend to do the mugs bet of L15/31/63 just because I enjoy the thought of getting all the selections up! Of coures if I strongly fancy one, I bet it single as well.
This got me thinking about bets from years ago that my Dad used to mention. Remember being at school and picking 4 horses and he put them in a bet called a Dundee Shuffle and got quite a return compared to the amount staked. Never knew how the bet worked until tonight!
DUNDEE SHUFFLE
4 selections combined in 4 full stake Singles Any to Come a half stake Trixie on the other three, 6 half stake Doubles Any to Come a full stake Double on the other two, 4 half stake Trebles and each way half stake Accumulator. (16 bets, 4 at full stake and 12 at half stake, e.g. 4 x 50p + 12 x 25p = £5 stake).
Some obscure bets here from days gone by.
December 13, 2007 at 23:48 #130428Blue Brazil, you have just answered a question that has plagued me for years!

… Seeing it now, the Dundee Shuffle is every bit the nonsense bet I imagined it to be! I’m surprised the bookmakers don’t publicise it more!

This topic brought that bet back into my head after more than 30 years, never heard it mentioned since and I think that’s the one and only time I’ve done that bet thanks to my old Dad!
Don’t think it can compete with a Lucky 15

December 14, 2007 at 01:56 #130441I like dutching and betting a small stake reverse f/c with my dutching bets, I also like patents and Lucky 15’s but I will NEVER bet anything under 6/4 sometimes even 2/1.
Betting on odds on shots is one of my pet hates and seeing people do this makes me laugh.
December 14, 2007 at 02:09 #130443Win singles only for me usually. Though a few weeks back I had a straight double and won a bomb (for me anyway). Usually though I never bet anything other than a win single.
December 14, 2007 at 09:50 #130468My favourite bet is Gilroy.

Why does it make you laugh?
Value in odds on shots is just the same as value in short, medium or long shots.
Bizarre statement
December 14, 2007 at 15:48 #130506It may sound "bizzare" to you because it’s obvious you must bet odds on shots, it makes me laugh because most of these bets are expected to win by the bettor yet so many go by the wayside and then the moaning kicks in – that makes me laugh!
Therefore punters who back odds on shots make me laugh.
I very much doubt there is any value in betting an odds on shot even though there are a few that say there is (that also makes me laugh), in fact there’s no value in betting odds on shots, if an odds on shot wins a race there’s those that say it was value but we don’t bet after races. It’s all got to be done before the race therefor there’s no value as the race still has to be won.

Jim,
You sound like an intelligent contributor but your post confuses me.
If your tissue (or someone else’s for that matter) has a horse at 1/2 but you see he’s available at 4/6 – is that not value?
It’s the same value if you see a horse you think should be 6/4 trading at 2/1.
Your last paragraph inidcates we should not bet on horses, since we do not know until after the event. Bizarre.
Backing favourite after favourite has never been as profitable (or least likely to produce a loss), on the exchanges.
On a personal level, yes I would, if I felt it was a good value bet.
Nothing against you, but it’s incorrect to say backing odds on shots does not represent value.
December 14, 2007 at 16:06 #130512Jim
I think there is value to be obtained at any price, even long odds on.
Many bookmakers bet at odds on in most races simply by fielding against the odds against favourite with not much for the others.
Also, there are stats to show that laying odds on horses at around 2/1 (i.e. backing 2/1 on shots) is the only profitable betting strategy for those backing blind.
This type of betting requires a strong constitution and deep pockets, but there are some who make good money at it.
It’s not my cup of tea, but I wouldn’t scoff at anyone who prefers backing short priced favourites to big stakes.
December 14, 2007 at 16:10 #130514No probs from me Salse if you think backing odds on shots is ok, I was only explaining why it makes me laugh, you can bet whatever way you want.
If you feel a horse is say 1/2 in your eyes and it’s on offer at 4/6 then sure I agree with you that that looks like value, you could also say the same about a horse you think should be 50/1 and is available at 66/1.
Was Three Boars value at 2/5 in the first race at Southwell today? surely some of the odds on backers must have thought that one was a 2/7 shot?
Artemis, just seen your post as I was about to post this.
I’m not saying everyone shouldn’t bet odds on I’m just saying that it makes me laugh when they do and I tried explaining to Salse why it did.
December 14, 2007 at 16:29 #130521Ok, Jim.
I know you are a sensible fellow. I thought Harry Honkers had slipped a Glenmorangie into your hand.
