Have you seen them live, Matt? they’re amazing. Can’t decide whether to see them at the NEC in December. Although I bought Ellie Goulding
and The Coral [still churning out the same stuff] recently, I’m still playing Arcade Fire on a loop.

No, not yet, but people have told me’ they’re very good. Kasabian are the best live band I’ve seen recently, but they’ve become far too commercial for me’ now

August 26, 2010 at 18:01 #314739Not sure about Kasabian being more commercial, unless that means that they appeal to a wider and more mature [talking about me here] audience. They used to base themselves on the Oasis ‘you looking at me; duff’ school of performers
. I’ve always liked their albums, but the last one was especially good. There’s a track that starts off with someone talking; it’s from a film called Sans Soleil by Chris Marker. That’s when I realised there was bit more to Kasabian than I’d thought. Would still be wary of seeing them live, though…I owe The Coral an apology; their album is quite listenable to.

Fair point well made
A great deal happened in those 20 months though, and surely you couldn’t object to this Band of Brothers (and Sister)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Hwbhd7c_as

I never quite got Dinosaur Jr, but I’m one of them who loved Freak Scene, and Feel the Pain, whether a fan or not.
As for Sonic Youth, an excellent choice.

That’s better, a good guitar band.

Indeed I couldn’t! Spookily I was only listening to this Kim Gordon-fronted slagging off of LL Cool J last week;

Twenty years old, that one is – where does the time go. And here’s something they knocked up last year;

This is very good. Dream like verse and a thwackingly in your face unforgettable chorus.
The video perfectly conjures up the essence of being in a struggling young band – takes me back to the sh*t holes around London about 20 years ago.

If you remember this you will recall it was spawned from the only album to be recorded by "Dali’s Car".
So it is amazing to read on http://www.mickkarn.net that the seriously ill bass genius and songwriter Karn is to record a follow up nearly 30 years later with Pete Murphy of Bauhaus fame.
At the time the LP was dismissed as self indulgent but now I think most serious musicians regard it as an "out there" original an important work.
Enjoy some more:

Love the keyboard on this.
Cracking, but about 13 years on and 2/3rds of Japan were creating this sort of challenging and visceral work:

Do buy a copy of Mick’s book if you get the chance from http://www.mickkarn.net – it really does sadly expose Mr Sylvian as being a very cynical, selfish greedy man. Somewhat in complete contrast to the public image.
