Kind Of Blue – Miles Davis
Not many recordings stand out as "best ever2 in any genre
but that does…
Perfection
December 9, 2009 at 22:45 #263057Oh no Himself; I’ve got Saucerful of Secrets [first album I ever bought, along with Abraxus]. Just wanted Piper at the Gates of Dawn because of the picture of my beloved Syd on the front; it’s the same picture that I had in my bedroom along with Mill House and Team Spirit. I’m sure I can get it on ebay, but I like browsing through charity shops in the hope of finding hidden treasure. As it’s my raison d’etre at the moment perhaps I shall just disappear in a puff of smoke if I find it….
December 10, 2009 at 12:39 #263143It seemed strange that both Syd and Dessie should die in the same year and a testament to Syd’s charisma that he made the headlines pretty much all over the world. See Emily Play will always be my favourite song of all time. I told my daughter at the time that I felt that, if our lives are like a jigsaw puzzle made up of people, places and events that shape the person that we will eventually become, someone had started to take away the pieces one by one. She then gave me piece to put back..my first grandchild [who loves music with a passion].
December 10, 2009 at 14:35 #263177The video for Arnold Layne is an all time classic imo. Emily was actually written about a real person and I was so jealous; I so wanted it to be me. How did Pink Floyd become so boring….
December 10, 2009 at 15:14 #263201Syd’s real name was Roger (I’m sure you knew that). Maybe too many Rogers spoiled the broth ?!

I actually think Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here far exceed those early twin Syd/LSD influenced Floyd albums; although those two 60s albums do stand to remind us what a wayward genius Barrett was. However, compostionally and musically, as well as lyrically, I have to say that the Waters’ driven 70s Floyd took them onto a new level – not only financially, but artistically and creatively too.
In fact, Roger Waters alludes to Syd’s constant search to make the definitive/perfect Pink Floyd album in the lyrics of Shine On You Crazy Diamond ( a song about Syd ) : " You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon" ( DSOFTM ).
Nevertheless, songs such as See Emily Play, Dominoes, Arnold Layne ( about a transvestite, I believe ), The Effervescing Elephant and Bike ( a particular favourite of mine ) pay testament to Syd Barrett’s fine ( and unique ) song writing talent.
That said, I still prefer early Genesis.

December 10, 2009 at 16:28 #263214Our copy of Liege and Lief was so bad we took it back;I didn’t get another copy till I bought it on tape years later. I know I’m a bit evangelical about it at the moment, but anyone who likes Fairport must surely like Show of Hands. I’ve been singing The Napoli all week. Phil used to be with The Albion Band and is the most accomplished musician you could ever see, and Steve Kneightley writes the best lyrics I’ve heard for a long time. And to refer back to banned song lyrics on the other thread, if ever a song should be banned it’s Bonnie Black Hair by Fairport. So obviously rude that even I get the meaning, but so cleverly ambiguous that you couldn’t ban it. Great stuff.
December 10, 2009 at 16:48 #263218Indeed Moe, (fairly) subtle innuendo that would have been lost on the Mary Whitehouses of the day – ‘all tight lips and cold feet’ Floyd fans
Not a particular favourite of mine, too ‘finger in ear’ folky for me but here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMGDsRdcWRk
and the lyrics:
On the fourteenth of May at the dawn of the day
With my gun on my shoulder to the woods I did stray
In search of some game if the weather proved fair
To see could I get a shot at the bonny black hare
Oh, I met a young girl there with her face as a rose
And her skin was as fair as the lily that grows
I says "My fair maiden, why ramble you so?
Can you tell me where the bonny black hare do grow?"
Oh, the answer she gave me, her answer was "No
But it’s under me apron they say it do grow
And if you’ll not deceive me I vow and declare
We’ll both go together to hunt the bonny black hare"
Well, I laid this girl down with her face to the sky
And I took out my ramrod and my bullets likewise
I says "Lock your legs round me and dig in with your heels
For the closer we get, oh, the better it feels"
The birds they were singing in the bushes and trees
And the song that they sang was "Oh, she’s easy to please"
I felt her heart quiver and I knew what I’d done
Says I "Have you had enough of my old sporting gun?"
Oh, the answer she gave me, her answer was "Nay
It’s not often young sportsmen like you come this way
And if your powder is willing and your bullets play fair
Why don’t you keep firing at the bonny black hare?"
"Oh, my powder is wasted and my bullets all gone
My ramrod is limp and I cannot fire on
But I’ll be back in the morning and if you are still here
We’ll both go together to hunt the bonny black hare"Suspected a Syd fan would be a Fairport fan too
December 12, 2009 at 19:31 #263588One decent little band which I dont ever recollect being mentioned on here (apologies if they have already but think they deserve a shout out anyways) but which Ive finally got round to downloading the discography of is COLD WAR KIDS. Getting quite into them.

December 12, 2009 at 22:31 #263608Haven’t heard anything by The Dead Weather that makes me want to listen to more of their stuff. Jack White doing one collaboration too many, I think. Bring back Meg, Jack.
December 12, 2009 at 23:14 #263612Seconded – was pretty underwhelmed by them on Later… a few weeks back. Get on with recording a follow-up to Icky Thump, Jack, if you please!

December 13, 2009 at 22:16 #263742For the record, graysons also likes Phil Collins, Elton John, Sting and Tina Turner………………

I have been called a stick-up-the-botty wet Liberal by Lolly’s Mate.
I have been told I sup beer like a budgie by Prufrock.
I have even been called a jumps-obsessed retard by more posters than I care to recall.
But in my three year tenure on these hallowed boards I have never, ever, EVER been the victim of such a vicious personal slight as the one so-called Mr Cormack of 15 posted above.
You are an egregious, wicked, godless individual, sir, and I send you to Heck forthwith.

And here’s me thinking you were a big Mahler and Mozart fan.
December 16, 2009 at 09:24 #264044Was at the Ian Brown gig last night.
He still can’t sing to save his life, but he is top banana in all other rock’n’roll respects.
December 16, 2009 at 10:25 #264053Didn’t they [in a time long long ago before the internet]spray ‘Stone Roses’ all over Manchester one night? Or is that a rock’n’roll myth? Is he still the only guy on the planet who still wears shell suits??
December 16, 2009 at 11:32 #264067Not sure about the spray-painting story, moe, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
King Monkey was sans shell-suit last night; looking mean and lean in a new suede-cut, and a pair of shades that – not unlike a shell suit – only Broonie could pull off.
Top one.
