had an exhausting afternoon looking after my grandson, after a pretty hectic morning at work….by 3 o’clock I just happened to turn on the the cd player to see what was in it and it was Kings of Leon…grandson immediately lay down on the sofa and went straight to sleep; know how you feel, I said to myself because KoL have the same effect on me but, being afraid that, if I turned the music off he would immediately wake up I listened to it 3 times and now really like it; still have a bit of a problem with the singers voice, though.
November 19, 2008 at 03:47 #190571I know what you mean Moehat, sometimes I wonder if I’ve decided after all these years if I like them or not….I guess you just have to be in the right frame of mind…
Although their lyric "just another girl who wants to rule the world" was my quote of choice on myspace for a fair while to be fair…
November 19, 2008 at 04:15 #190576Must admit, I quite like that I dont really understand what kaleb is saying half the time in the songs, sometimes its better, like with that new killers tune human. The line "are we human, or are we dancer", where as I can make out what hes saying I dont understand what he’s banging on about.
Was in Walkabout in Middlesborough on Saturday and Sex On Fire came on. I couldnt believe how mad everyone went. Personally I’d have prefered "Charmer", as that opening bass line is amazing and was one of my highlights from the V festival. Dont dislike the New Kings Of Leon album but it just hasnt grown on me yet, like it seems to with everyone else.
Gave the Fleet Foxes a listen earlier but couldnt get into them, may take a few more listens, theres another band about at the minute that were on jools holland a few weeks ago, and I cant figure out if I dont mind them or hate the – The friendly fires. Its a bit of a different sound, and complete marmite.
Was having a litle Youtube music head earlier (just scooting through songs that came into my head whilst listening to the last one) and went to listen to REM – Great Beyond. Came across a Hybrid Remix of it, and thought I’d check it out, as many hybrid tunes, although mostly boring beats usually have a short piece of brillliant music part way through, sure enough about 6 minutes into it there was an amazing little minute. May not be to everyones taste, but worth a listen nonetheless.

An absolute favorite of mine on youtube is this semi unplugged-ish version of The Editors- Racing Rats from spinner interface, which I reckon is as good if not better than the original.

great version of that Bulwark, i have seen editors so many times i have lost count they are without doubt one of the best live acts around at the moment and still under-rated to me, they played early this year in the olympia in dublin (like the old vic theatre) i think its the best live venue in Ireland, and rocked the place i love the way they dont go on talking S.h.i.t a la coldplay although tom does pull some faces
November 19, 2008 at 05:25 #190588oh yeah i have been playing all my oldish cd’s of late GORILLAZ is one thats been on the go i hear they are making a new album ??
November 19, 2008 at 06:50 #190599Seen the editors on the friday at oxegen, they were definitely top drawer Batman, and their second album was brilliant. Chemical Brothers are my fav live act though, they just blew my head back. Also thought the kings of leon were awesome live, but I was pulling some funny faces at the time which may have accounted for a lot.

In his weekly blog, leading chart authority and writer James Masterson writes that; "The line ‘are we human or are we dancer?’ is attributed to the author Hunter S Thompson as a despairing comment on what he saw as the decline of society".
He further opines that; "Be under no illusion, ‘Human’ will go down as their masterpiece. The track is an effortless fusion of 80s new wave and modern day Vegas rock. Countless reviewers prior to me have groped around for just where the track’s influences lie, citing everything from New Order to Duran Duran. Let’s just cut to the core, ‘Human’ is nothing less than The Killers through and through and perhaps more so than anything they have released to date is destined to go down in history as an all time enduring pop classic".
I’m not sure I’d quite go far, nor do I think it will exceed its chart entry position of 4 by very much (number 2 hit "When We Were Young" remains the band’s highest charting effort to date), but I certainly prefer it to anything off the last album.

November 19, 2008 at 14:16 #190616Zome is trying to convince me to go to a gig after Towcester this Sunday in Oxford to see Ida Maria and someone called VV Brown
She wasn’t really selling it to me when she described the latter as “the one who does that blood song that sounds like the monster mash”
As my internet connection here is too tenuous to risk youtube, does anyone have the foggiest what the mare is on about?
Yours in somewhat worried anticipation….
VV Brown was on Later… a few weeks ago. She does a sort of modern take on doop-wop and 60s girl group stuff, all self-penned, self-produced and self-played (although not so much on stage), and this is her second pop at fame after earlier attempts to make her into something she isn’t (broadly speaking, Northamptonshire’s answer to Christina Aguilera) came to nought. She’s been able to try again, on her own terms this time, off the back of royalties gained from selling songs to Sugababes and Girls Aloud.
Ida Maria I think you’re already familiar with. Should be a storming end to a fantastic day! I won’t be at Towcester, alas, owing to family commitments back Oop North. Meh.
HTH,

November 19, 2008 at 17:35 #190644Cheers Grays, I should think she’s quite relieved at no longer having to be the Northants equivalent of Aguiwhatsit, I don’t think anyone needs that in this world. I must say your explanation was a lot more useful than Zome’s (!!), sounds like it could well be worth the while.
Not sure if I’ll make the gig but we’ll see, Towcester is the main plan of the day provided Norfolk doesn’t have other plans for me over the weekend…honestly you hear all through your life that selling your house is the stuff of stress, then you go and try to and who’d have thunk it, turns out it is!

Incredible. Christmas Number 1 contender? If it isn’t it bloody should be…
December 6, 2008 at 22:14 #194934just catching up with 30 years of The Waterboys…….[and the Mediaeval Baebes….loved the soundtrack to the Virgin Queen which they did]
December 6, 2008 at 22:18 #194937A little way to go yet, Bulwark, although it did climb to no. 74 this week after a couple of weeks of bubbling under in the low 100s.
I certainly prefer it a lot to her previous singles this year – Dusk Til Dawn et al didn’t quite hit the spot for me.
I fear it might be swamped by the annual influx of Christmas-oriented downloads hereafter, though – All I Want for Christmas is You has already re-entered the top 30, Fairytale of New York the top 50, and that won’t be anywhere near the end of it come the next couple of weeks.

December 6, 2008 at 22:19 #194939Ive been watching Arcade Fire’s live performances and have made it my life mission to see them.
This is my favorite

but the opening 30 secs of this is amazing too.

You can feel the atmosphere, no other band can match that IMO.
December 7, 2008 at 00:12 #194962when we went to see them someone threw a bottle of water onto the stage and Win stormed off [don’t blame him]..at that point I was just mesmerized by the whole performance and felt totally cheated….desperate to see them again but it won’t be the same, somehow, but at least I’d got a taste of how mind blowing they are…
December 7, 2008 at 08:44 #195052I’m so envious moe, I would give my right hand to just see them play maybe three or four tunes. I have been converting my mates to the arcade fire way of thinking, and to be fair it wasnt hard, they are all arcade fire addicts now, just need to find somewhere they are touring next year and we are there.
Ref: Ladyhawke – I was watching one of those long periods on one of the digital music channels the other night dedicated to one hit wonders and I cant remember who it was but remembered thinking a group were brilliant but never really made it past the one track they had, but thouight about the individuality of the track and thought to myself "why didnt I think ages ago that they would be one hit wonders?". With Ladyhawke I think they have all the hallmarks of a one hit wonder track written all over them, brilliant song, brilliant feel to the song but cant think they can really follow it up with anything substantial. hope they make it to chrimbo number one though instead of whatever (less good than the original) tripe cowell releases as the x factor contender, which will instantly be favorite to be christmas no1.
December 7, 2008 at 20:38 #195197This song was part of a Question on Popmaster on Radio 2 and had to dig it up, Very good track even though all the French i learned at School was no help at all.
