Amadou and Mariam played Glastonbury a couple of years ago; I saw some of their set on the telly but didn’t catch their name..I really loved them….can now find out more about them on utube..I presume they’ve got albums out? [finally managed to get Espers on cd…very phsychadelic folk type stuff, not at all American….very Saucerful of Secrets meets Pentangle…..]

Oh well that’s a shame, can’t be helped I suppose, she’s done well for an old bird!

I can’t believe I was just so patronising about Debbie Harry…..

Don’t worry, Zoz, she still speaks very highly of you.

I’m not listening to anything right now but this is music related.

Rather a coup for my town. Dionne Warwick will be performing a one-off concert in Torquay in November.

Amadou and Mariam have been recording together since the late 1980s and the back catalogue is accordingly sizeable, though little of the cassette-only, pre-1999 material is available outside of Mali, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.

    You should be able to find these albums at any self-respecting world music stockist over here, though;

    Se Te Djon Ye (1999)
    Sou Ni Tile (1999)
    Tjé Ni Mousso (2000)
    Wati (album) (2003)
    Dimanche à Bamako (2005)
Je pense à toi: Best of (2005)

They also recorded the official anthem for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, “Celebrate The Day” (German: “Zeit, dass sich was dreht”), alongside Herbert Grönemeyer (the Das Boot actor-turned stadium-filling rock star). The song topped the German charts in June 2006.

    Hope this helps,

    Jeremy

Much like your masquerading as a jumps zealot – I’ve seen your Hamilton season ticket, Flat boy.

just checked out utube; je pense a toi is beautiful with the added bonus of being sung in French which to my mind is the most beautiful language on the planet.

Nope, she clashed with Bill Bailey in the comedy tent, which settled that choice for me pretty emphatically. I know you’re a fan, but for the time being her Pot Noodle hair and wistful ways must remain as much as a stranger to me as WKD Blue to a Methodist.

    I did manage to take in all the following, though;

    MUSIC
    =====

    BEARSUIT
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKlyZYofzR8
Endearingly shambolic as ever, but I can’t decide whether scrawny bloke’s bleats that we’d not be watching if there were a trendy indie band on another stage were either disingenuous, patronising, or wrought from some sort of “How dare you like us!” complex. After three albums and many Peel sessions, the chances are that many of us were watching you through choice, you numpty,

    HOWLING BELLS
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbBepI5FVgo
    Spectral, majestic Anglo-Australian brooding,

    JAMES YUILL
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyROzlScNxQ
Really interesting folktronica, albeit more tronica than folk; the hailing of him as “the techno Nick Drake” is shorthand, lazy journalism that even the NME at its worst would baulk at, though,

    ERRORS
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Mq9d3cWZ8
Clanking, insistent instrumentals from Mogwai offshoot,

    AMADOU & MARIAM
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shbOmNakdTo
My set of the weekend, and there was some stiff competition. Anyone not leaving the Uncut tent after this joyous reaffirmation of life a happier person needs to try harder,

    SEBASTIEN TELLIER
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz58Hw9hldw
One of the notable victims of the Uncut stagehands’ tardiness, with just four songs – including a dreamy extended version of his Eurovision song – sandwiched between a too-late start and a too-early finish,

    dEUS
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2CFDsG_oxg
Older, wiser, and less annoying than hitherto – both the band and me; The Architect is one of my singles of the year so far,

    THE HOUSE OF LOVE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVdfi1Vo … re=related
A reverential and captivating set; a pox on all the kids who hung around for Shine On and nothing else,

    SEASICK STEVE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNoPNC3e … re=related
Only caught the last half of this after House of Love; we loved him, he loved us,

    METRONOMY
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBb0zSmNevY
The beats pumped more menacingly around the Sunrise stage than they often do on record; a colossal You Could Easily Have Me got the human trampoline it truly deserved,

    SIGUR ROS
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDxMQaMqsig
Absolutely magical, the perfect choice of a dramatic, serene act to usher the sun back down behind the Obelisk stage; only the omission of Viorar Vel Til Loftarasa prevented it from being utterly perfect,

    MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtynjqYUOvk
Australian electronic music is in good health; Shadows was an obvious highlight,

    LYKKE LI
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJHdT1j6hH8
More than just This Year’s Scandinavian Nutjob, a captivating stage presence and some strong material,

    BLONDIE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfK8uMzkIK4
Ms Harry can command a stage and the band rather better than she can her voice nowadays, which is absolutely shot to buggery; fussy arrangements of well-known hits compounded things further,

    WAVE PICTURES
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OHfi4U2k-g
Caught the last half of this in lieu of the last half of Blondie; very wordy lyrics on occasion, but entirely passable, even if I’m not sure what the deal is with the marmalade statues,

    TINDERSTICKS
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4ZzxtibHYo
All of 20 minutes late on thanks to more Uncut stage ineptitude, and hauled off a couple of minutes early for fear of over-running, but wonderful during their time with us; the cover of Odyssey’s If You’re Looking for a Way Out worked beautifully.

    COMEDY
    =======
    Robin Ince
    Ben Norris
Adam Bloom (just swears a lot nowadays)
Mark Steel (still does a cracking Tony Benn impersonation)
    Marcus Brigstocke
    Andre Vincent

    Russell Howard
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeAkC9Zy … re=related

Ross Noble (Jedi worms, plinth angst, and a 3000-person conga, all apropos of sod all!)
Scott Capurro (deadly; outraged half the tent, left the other half helpless), Jon Richardson

Bill Bailey (no “Das Hokey Cokey”, so here it is instead)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKtxg1D7vZw

    Jeremy Hardy
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ics-4WGG9RE
    Gently malevolent as always

    Russell Kane
Phill Jupitus and Friends Improv (“Who’s Line is it”, basically, with the likes of Frost and Vranch in tow)

    Andrew Lawrence
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUJxT0Cu … re=related
Disturbing and fantastic – luckily didn’t carry out threat of pooing Monster Munch on us all

    Frankie Boyle (deadly)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5xcPqRV … re=related

    Milton Jones
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F3Kqgzbhm0
    Pun-tastic

    Simon Evans (weak)
    Otis Lee Crenshaw
    Stewart Lee (slow-burning brilliance)
Hans Teeuwen (the Dutch Andy Kauffman – many people didn’t get it).

Mrs C also attended Dickon “Fosca” Edwards’ 1920s-influenced club night The Beautiful and The Damned, as well as some of The Smiths: The Musical and the Royal Shakespeare Company being attacked by some zombies. We both took in one evening of Sean Rowley’s Guilty Pleasures club night before my old legs gave out. I blame the blast of Lionel Richie. Old, old, old, I’m so bleeding old.

Apparently we missed Julian Cope sound-checking for 25 minutes of a 45 minute set, playing three songs (including a Teardrop Explodes one under sufferance) and then cutting himself on his mikestand before they pulled him off stage. Another quiet, dignified evening’s work, then.

More links and stuff to follow as and when.

I trust they did this one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ5Grncdjlc

An indescribably joyous piece, and a magnificent video. Enough to reduce a grown man to tears.

They not only played it, but opened with it. Very, very wise move.

Have seen a few of the comedians you have mentioned.

Robin Ince i have seen in his support act to Ricky Gervais and is very funny in his own right.

    Well OK just him live

Frankie Boyle is the best at the moment on MTW and any other panel show he does and it is amazing how he gets away with what he says.

Russell Howard likewise is coming on leaps and bounds.

Bill Bailey now makes me check for Tea and Coffee making facilities all the time i go to a hotel.

Yesterday, today, tomorrow it’ll be The Beach Boys for me.

This song is particularly appropriate for this time of the year…
