Working class music in the UK has more often than not centered around soul and funk. Certainly in londonReggae, ska and various kinds of heavy metal here in the cradle of the Industrial Revolution. Same principle though.

Mozart cuts across all boundaries.Quite. I do cringe when I hear the word ‘genius’ thrown about and it turns out that people are talking about that bloke from the White Stripes, Pete Doherty or the third turd from the left in Razorlight. Now these people may make music that is pleasing, that stimulates, inspires or has meaning and good luck to them (apart from Razorlight). But its still just guitar, bass, drums and half a dozen chords.
Mozart wrote his first symphony at the age of eight. End of competition.
You see, I know we are supposed to think that everything is relative these days, that Tracy Emin’s sweaty socks are just as good as Monet’s lily pond. But it isn’t true. Everything is not relative. Some things are better than others. Titian was better then Hirst will ever be. Classical music is better than popular music. And by better, I mean more skillful, more complex, more interesting and therefore more worthy of acclaim. And I say that even though I know very little about it. Mind you that hasn’t stopped me posting on any other subject.

you forgot to mention Northern soul which (i know from friends from your area) is big that way too
As for productivity, it is amazing that supposedly "great creative bands" release about one album every five years.
Perhaps alook at the Beatles output between 1963 and 1970…would shame them somewhat. Or many other acts fromthat era
Mozart was extraordinary of course but even by current standards so many modern acts are plainly uninspired. An hours worth of new music every 2500 weeks?
Jazz is an exception here with most top acts getting recordings out 1/2 times a year

I think that when you encounter swivel eyed fanatics on the tube or in the pub say…
…..its the best policy
July 8, 2008 at 14:56 #172291I wouldnt usually answer a nutter like you but i am sick of the continous misquotes
1. I didnt say "classical is better than popular" I said Mozart is more talented than …u2 say. There is crap classical. I would rather the Beatles than Albinoni say
2. If other acts are on indie labels (does it matter what label they are on? ) so what? I DISLIKE WHITE GUITAR DRIVEN ART SCHOOL MUSIC in the same way that endless "indie" fans dislike RnB say
3. Confined? The only music you refer to is white rock. If you had the brains to follow this you would have notcied that i have touched on soul, jazz, funk, classical …to which i would add latin (brazilian in particular) and some "world" music (dislike that horrible phrase)
4. As for "arguments" You havent answered one point directly
5. "knowledge of music". Im glad that youve been able to work out my full lifes listening experince and the size and extent of my collection form half a dozen posts
July 8, 2008 at 20:41 #172351Please do not try to go down the route of claiming to have wide and varied musical tastes
No i wont
I could not possibly know what is on my ipod and in my record collection. I will accept that you know far more about my tastes in music than i do
The rest of your post is drivel
July 8, 2008 at 21:06 #172354No time for Phlip Glass myself either, but Kennedy (who is depsite image, a wonderful violinist) was ok with the jazz stuff i thought
And would you call John Coltranes Greensleeves crossover?
He’s a pain in the aerse but I’d certainly not question Nige the mockney’s virtuosity on the violin, just wish he’d stick to the ‘proper stuff’ ha ha
Coltrane being Coltrane renders Greensleeves unrecognisable.
Both he and Charlie Parker don’t do a lot for me, though I can admire their technique and invention. Just tooo ‘free form’. More at home with the ‘trad’ sax of Ben Webster, Benny Carter or Coleman Hawkins
ain’t music brilliant

Hush – Kuler Shaker
Pastoral Symphony – Ludwig Beef Oven

Good grief I have only heard of two of those
July 9, 2008 at 01:13 #172408.
Mary had a little lamb
Whose fleece as white as snow.
And everywhere that Mary went,
The lamb was sure to go!It followed her to school one day,
which was against the rules.
It made the children laugh and play,
To see a lamb at school. The Grimes Bible states…
” Hell fire to those that abuseth animals ”

July 9, 2008 at 15:27 #172535Why the need to get so personal?
July 9, 2008 at 15:35 #172542Romanovs & Capulets – Sergei Prokofiev
Love "Dance of the Knights" by prokofiev. It goes well as a march out tune at the stadium of light, but not as the theme tune for the apprentice. Sure Alan Sugar is a knight, but its too big a tune for such a littlepathetic bloke.

July 9, 2008 at 18:01 #172565Generally. Though it was your post that finally prompted me to ask the question.
"Musical differences". We all have them: there’s no need for them to be more than that, in my opinion.
Glad to see that there is at least one fellow Smiths fan on here, anyway!
July 10, 2008 at 21:10 #172741Well, due to a very late defection from Oxygen (AT PUNCHESTOWN RACECOURSE) tomorrow I will mostly be listening to the Editors, Kings Of Leon, Aphex Twin and possibly Groove Armada.
