As much as I love NH, I do think people in it tend to be parochial and don’t look further than GB & Ireland. There is some fantastic prizemoney in Europe, especially France, and with almost guaranteed soft ground, what is keeping them here?
March 15, 2008 at 16:35 #151568Why don’t GB and Ire run in Fr?
The thought of Dawn Run.
Would there be a rush for good horses to run in a valuable race over Cheltenhams X country course?
Quite similar.

Value Is EverythingMarch 15, 2008 at 18:48 #151586Last year kauto won the gold cup because they used neptune as a pace maker, they had a claimer on him from their own camp, he jumped of in front and slowed it down knowing that kauto would out kick any one up the run in….
This year 2008 mick fitz rode him and although he went of in front he kept up a evan gallop all the way round , the jockeys were saying the ground was on the soft side and the distances were taking some getting..
There fore Denman out stayed Kauto as he pobably didnt get the trip in that ground ..
As for neptune both his last runs were personal bests hes a 7yr old and improving all the time ( so says the champion trainer PN) and as he has to do the donkey work for the others, Harry Findly went over and thanked Mr Hales as he knows he couldnt have won it with out the help of neptune ,
As for being rated 178 i agree its high but he just ran KS to a shd and denman to 7l so thats about right……
March 15, 2008 at 18:59 #151588AndyRAC and Ginge thank you so much for repeating what was already as said in my post……it’s similar to watching paint dry posting on this forum……
March 15, 2008 at 19:43 #151603If The Listener could get within 4 lengths of Denman in the Lexus when ridden far too cautiously, then surely he should have run in the Gold Cup and not the Ryaniar.
If Neptune can run so close on an unfavourable left handed undulating track then The Listener was worth another chance and would have added to the class of the race.
It was a shame Star didn’t run as I wanted to back a Nicholls 1 2 3 4. He would have put up a better effort than an unfit Exotic Dancer.
It was not Arkle v Mill House by any stretch of the imagination and I’m not sure Kauto would have jumped the Cheltenham fences of even 10 years ago with such contempt.
March 15, 2008 at 20:04 #151616I look at the profile of a horse like Beef or Salmon and think, "there would have been a Grand Steeplechase de Paris in you at your best, son, but we never got to find out…"
What? Is it a five mile three runner flat race then?
March 15, 2008 at 21:02 #151644Thanks for that information, Beckster.
I saw what happened but was wondering about the tactical arrangement. For that KS to have won, he’d have had to lie up a lot closer to the pace. It didn’t seem as though they wanted that, but, perhaps, he just couldn’t live with them in the tiring conditions?Whatever,’tis done now for another year.
If I had unlimited funds, the two I’d want to buy are Denman and Neptune. They looked the part to me.Btw, are you in the Daly stables, by any chance? No need to answer if you’d rather not, but you do seem to know what you’re on about when it comes to horses.
March 15, 2008 at 21:04 #151645Because what you said was just so revolutionary that no-one else could possibly agree, FOF? And you think I’ve got the problem…
March 16, 2008 at 03:44 #151701Thank you for that fantastic contribution to the duscussion LGR.
Once again you have excelled yourself, I just don’t know what the forum would do without you.
Once again nothing to do with the subject at hand just another nasty post from the great LGR…… geez you really are an axxhole mate…….best excuse for a condom in the history of man
March 16, 2008 at 13:10 #151772I’ve read in the Observer today that Mr. Hales didn’t want Liam Heard to ride Neptune; does that mean that he holds him partly responsible for the loss of Granit Jack?
March 16, 2008 at 14:34 #151798no not ataa mr hales doesent hold liam responsible 4 jack at all, he just wanted a more exsperienced jocky on nipper for such a competative race

Very well said High Ken !!!
It certainly was not Arkle v Mill House (which didn’t have a close finish anyway) and was far from being one of the most exciting races at the Festival – let alone in the history of Gold Cups. The only thing that was the greatest about it was the sheer volume of hype, which some folk feel compelled to justify under any circumstances !
March 17, 2008 at 11:20 #151996No Galileo Fantastic Light finish
but the hype,
– and often the kettle boiling
is better than the tea –
certainly brought the world’s hacks
eyes out. They so wanted a head to head
but this is so unlikely when
high twigged obstacles litter the course.
My enjoyment of the race was marred
by a waterworks problem
which exasperated me til three pm.I sprinted and found a jimilarkle shop.
Everyone watched in stunned silence
hardly a breath and boredom etched on most faces,
a funeral march
as their accumulators had fallen earlier.
Someone shouted in disgust
at the second horse lost its position
at the end.
I will certainly pick my spot
next year and avoid Kill bill. -
