Having missed Bangor the other week, we’re planning to start our season with a trip to Wetherby on Saturday. Never been there before, so any tips/advice would be most welcome. I assume we don’t need to book our tickets in advance? And, can we get to the last fence?
October 25, 2010 at 18:07 #324524Used to be great until they repositioned it onto the far side and added an AWT strip on the near side for the horses to gallop onto before going onto the course.
Haven’t tried it but I think those who use the centre course enclosure can get near the fence but not 100% sure on that.
October 25, 2010 at 18:25 #324527Yep, shame they moved the last fence from the Tatts side, but as GD says it can now be sidled upto on the infield side
The penultimate (4.35) race is a chase so you may want to cross the course to watch it by the fence so long as you don’t mind staying there for the last race too, as I don’t think passes are issued from Stands to Course
Other than that, on the assumption you’re driving, no particular tips I can think of.
Easy to get around, worth going to the pre-parade and saddling ‘barn’ if you want some up-close-and-personal with the horses
Please give Ollie Magern my sincerest regards
October 25, 2010 at 18:55 #324533Thanks; useful to know about the fence…probably won’t waste our time trying to find it so pre parade ring it is [where I spend most of Cheltenham]. Someone will tell me now that they’ve moved the fence opposite the stands at Kelso as well
.
October 25, 2010 at 19:39 #324542Best viewing is from the seats in the old members stand…theres a kiosk at the side of the stand selling a special pass to get up there for £2…well worth it but they do sell out so be quick!
October 25, 2010 at 19:47 #324543Strange you should say that, because I’ve just dug out my ‘From Aintree to York’ book which rather slated Wetherby but did praise the old stand [the new one was being built at the time the book was written]. I always forget to look at this book until after I’ve been somewhere new but, as it gave Chepstow a 5 star rating
and Bangor a one star rating [?; I love Bangor] I was prepared to ignore what it said about Wetherby.
October 25, 2010 at 20:03 #324545moehat. The fence in front of the stand is still there and if you come to Kelso you can go to any of the nine fences to get the best view.
October 25, 2010 at 20:11 #324546That’s good news as we’ve got our tickets for the Borders National already, and I was beginning to think they moved all the fences whenever I went anywhere. Probably get snowed off, now.
