Westmead Lord was a real dark horse coming into this, becasue although he hadn’t won a single heat in the run-up, but at the same time he had up to the final yet to make his usual fast start. An interesting call, but his ferocious drift in the ring eventually forced me to bottle it.
A fantastic achievement by Nick Savva, no doubt. I can’t help but feel that he’s been a little fortunate with the circumstances however. In the first two Derbys he won with what is without doubt a very special greyhound in The Hawk, and the third has won what has been hailed ‘the worst Derby in memory’, which is fair cop considering the favourite was turned over at something like 4/7 in a 5-dog heat in the early rounds.
