Thanks for the interesting replies. Based on replies to date, it appears Juveigneur is the Jumps record holder for lowest winning SP at 1/20, and Tree Of Life for lowest losing SP at the same price.
Not sure I would want to take odds of 1/20 for many horses to jump round, regardless of the opposition!
Amazing for a horse to be 1/14 in a Grade 1, though Douvan’s one was very uncompetitive.
September 6, 2021 at 00:37 #1559266Stand Guard started at either 1/80 or 1/66 (depending on the result source) in a 2 runner seller on the all weather at Southwell in 2014. The Racing Post has the SP at 1/80 but both Sporting Life and ATR have it at 1/66.

The shortest price I can find for a jumps race is 1/33 for Mohaayed in a 2 runner hurdle in May 2017. There’s quite a nice symmetry between this result and Mohaayed’s next victory the following year in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham at an SP of 33/1.

September 6, 2021 at 01:05 #1559268Great stuff Green

It seems very odd that Stand Guard has different SPs in different sources. However, he is our new Flat record holder for lowest winning SP if we go with the 1/80. Likewise Mohaayed is the new Jumps record holder for lowest winning SP at 1/33. Are there any others out there I wonder?
Another notable one I have found is Seamless who won on the Flat at Yarmouth at 1/50 in 2013.

September 6, 2021 at 09:05 #1559269I remember a Mark Johnston horse getting turned over easily at 1/20 in an all weather race at Lingfield just a few years ago.
Was a bigger price on opening show as I recall so someone did their brains in!
September 6, 2021 at 11:15 #1559274Seamless at 1/50 is a great find Marlingford.

Moyenne Corniche, you have a very good memory, the Johnston horse that got beat at 1/20 was Triple Dip in 2015, making it the equal shortest loser with Tree of Life that Marlingford has already mentioned.

The shortest priced Chaser I can find is Jenkins at 1/25.

P.S. my memory is terrible so I have to hold my hands up and admit that I’m using a results database going back to 2010 to find these.
September 6, 2021 at 12:15 #1559281Some more great finds there Green and Moyenne Corniche

I find it’s often a case of memory providing a vague recollection of something, and then using the internet/databases to firm up on the details.
Google has also given me Royal Forest as a 1/25 loser on the Flat at Ascot in 1948.

Was just thinking when you first started posting on here, Marlingford, I know it’s quite recently and mainly just to big up Davies. But have looked at your profile and you’ve been registered on here for five years. A spare account of another ‘member’ on here I’d guess, just sitting there quietly till needed.
No further questions
September 6, 2021 at 13:09 #1559288Hi Tank. I’m really confused by this message. It feels like I spend half my time on here disagreeing with Ian Davies (have a look at the ITV Racing thread for example)!
I think he posts some interesting stuff though, and I would like to think I have always been respectful to him and vice versa. I’m not really interested in forum cliques or politics, I’m interested in racing.
September 9, 2021 at 21:07 #1559724Green states as follows:

Hi Green,
Jerry M, 1912 Grand National winner, started at 1/20 when falling in a two horse race at Newbury sometime in 1909.
Furthermore, and no offence, Tree of Life was in fact Tree of Liberty. Plus, Triple Dip’s defeat occurred on the flat, which means that Tree of Liberty and Jerry M are the equal shortest priced losers over jumps. As far as we know.

If I’m reading the thread correctly, Royal Forest remains the shortest priced loser on the flat at 1/25, as per Marlingford’s post above.September 10, 2021 at 16:48 #1559875Hi Seasider,
Jerry M at 1/20 in 1909 is a very good find.
No offence taken, you’re right, I’ve checked again and the 1/20 loser I referred to earlier was indeed called Tree of Liberty. I got it mixed up with the similarly named Tree of Life that had previously been mentioned in the thread.
According to this Racing Post article, Triple Dip, Tree of Liberty and Jerry M are just 3 of 10 horses in GB to have been beaten at 1/20. The article also names Royal Forest as the shortest priced loser at 1/25. Good work Marlingford.
September 10, 2021 at 17:27 #1559881I don’t see the point in backing at such short odds.
Scenario 1 You’re on a losing streak you back this horse at these particular odds, it wins. Great you’ve backed a winner and feel great, then you realise you’ve actually lost on the day and what you’ve won is gone on the next bet.
Scenario 2 it also loses so you feel more of an idiot for backing it in the first place.
While I’ve not backed one at such short an odds, I have backed fairly heavy odds on and felt like win or lose it wasn’t worth it.
You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.September 10, 2021 at 17:58 #1559884The only vaguely rational thing I can come up with is that a 1/20 winner is still a 5% return on your money so maybe that’s what people see?
But whether you’ve got 20 quid or 20 grand, do you really need another pound or thousand so badly that you’ll risk it all? It’s a no from me.September 10, 2021 at 18:14 #1559890“I spend half my time on here disagreeing with Ian Davies (have a look at the ITV Racing thread for example)! Only half?
How boring it would be here if we all agreed on everything.
While I don’t purposely play Devil’s Advocate, I do have a penchant for cantankerous sweeping statements/outright rants and Marlingford is often a calm, invariably courteous, voice of reason tempering that and providing an alternative, more measured, view.
Marlingford is one of numerous people on TRF I enjoy interacting with here.

September 10, 2021 at 21:50 #1559918Thanks Ian. I’ve enjoyed interacting with you too since I started posting more regularly on here earlier this year. I think most of our initial interactions involved disagreeing, but as time has gone on I’ve noticed we actually agree on a fair amount. I will never turn the sound down on the TV though!
September 10, 2021 at 21:52 #1559920And I’ll never turn it up!
