You’ve beaten the book again Mike. I don’t know how you do it.

I liked Hold That Taught but he’s 5lbs out of the weights if Native River runs. Venetia better get on the phone for a decent claimer.

Hard to fathom that the defending champion could run off 10 stone if Native River runs. I think connections of Native River are bonkers personally but fair play to them. Does he look well handicapped off 166? Not to me. You’re asking the horse to replicate what he achieved 5 years ago now. Its a massive ask age wise.

Venetia has had claimers ride for her this season so all being well it shouldn’t be a problem. I’m happy both of mine have got in with relatively little on their backs. Looking forward to it

Tinman he ran to 168 10 months ago , I’m very happy with my 25s , he,s the best horse to run in this for years , 4 days of rain will make conditions perfect , he,ll take most of this field so far out of there comfort zones they,ll not know what day it is akin to Dessie when he won the irish , he also stays longer than the mother in law , tizzard said he wouldnt be running on good ground this season ….this may well be his GC , ask yourself this , what would happen if most of these ran in a GC …they’d be lapped

Trouble is he’ll need to be 170+ to win this and he was near enough lapped himself in the Gold Cup in March. He’s coming here because he’s not in the same league as Minella Indo or A Plus Tard and has no chance of winning a Gold Cup. The last 3 horses to finish 2nd to him were Bristol De Mai (at Sandown not Haydock), Secret Investor and Black Corton. All in Grade 2s. Hes not a Grade 1 animal anymore but his rating suggests otherwise. He’s a grand old boy and I can see the place part coming in but I’ll be staggered if there aren’t better handicapped animals in there and its a handicap at the end of the day. He’s giving over a stone to a young Scottish National winner and nearly two stone to a young Welsh National winner.

Just to add hes also fallen victim to the way the weights get framed and being an early closer. His new BHA mark post Aintree is 162 so hes 4lb wrong himself.

What did he run to to win it last time Tin man ? , the horses you are quoting are handicappers , realistically what horses in this could run in a GC , he,s getting older but his grade 2 form beating Bristol l is something both the National horses can only dream about , as I said he,s going to run and jump at a pace most of these can’t contemplate , another good example would be Grey Abbey winning the Scottish national , I was there that day , he jumped them daft and strung them out like washing all off top weight, Natives been the best British stayer of the last 5 years

Native River will have company up front in this. A few like to get on with it. Can’t see Native beating the whole field.

Achille and Potters Corner will relish conditions tomorrow. The former is just too consistent to ignore while the latter was all but given up on until that last run in the cross country and while I was convinced he was being laid out for the Veterans Final; this could be just as doable.

Four of the past 5 winners run in this (we’ll excuse Raz de Maree his absence as he’ll be 17 in a few days’ time).

    My ratings for this:

    175 Mac Tottie
    171 Trucker’s Lodge
    171 Ramses De Teillee
    171 Deise Aba
    171 Hill Sixteen
    169 Achille
    169 Potters Corner

A tight race as would be expected, but I’ve whittled down to three.

Mac Tottie 33/1 is well treated on his best form but there is a stamina doubt. He’s generally progressive though and the price covers the doubt.
Hill Sixteen 16/1 ran a corker at Aintree in the Becher and was closing at the end. A few pounds out of the handicap, but if Sandy thinks he’s the one from the stable for this then more than happy to row in with him.
Ramses De Teillee 22/1 has been bit below what is required for this until a decent effort at Haydock last time which offers encouragement. Stays well and placed second in this before.
