Boring it was for a neutral but well done Rangers for reaching the UEFA cup final, it was also pleasing to see Bayern Munich take a hiding.

May 2, 2008 at 20:33 #161199Who cares if it was boring or not, the object was to reach the final and the job was done, the Italians have been "boring" us for years with their defending and the Fiorentina coach will just have to eat those huge sour grapes. (he was a sore loser, no dignity).
As for Zenit being pretty useful, I’d probably just about agree with that but they have really only been useful on their own patch, their boss and former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat actually says the final will be a lot closer than some think, who cares anyway we are there and we have a 50-50 chance of winning it. (their top goal scorer also misses the final)

hello Manchester the bears are coming.
ps. every Rangers fan would’ve taken any team in the final and said "thank you very much" from the start, that is a no brainer!

Not if you were on AP at 9/2

Well done Rangers & I reckon it will be a British clean sweep of the Euro comps
May 3, 2008 at 10:56 #161305Zenit St. Petersburg were pretty useful away from their own patch against Bayer Leverkausen, I do recall.

May 3, 2008 at 10:58 #161306Well done to Rangers, fabulous achievement for a team without as much as one genuinely top-drawer player (although their manager is one of the best around). Smith hasn’t bought players, he’s looked at the bigger picture and bought components of a team that is most definitely greater than the sum of it’s parts.
I’m gutted Bayern were put out also. Partly because I was on at 9/2 like Perpetual, and partly because the final will now almost certainly degenerate into a game of chess rather quickly.

Friggo, I think you’re being unfair to Barry Ferguson (carrying an injury and has been almost all season), Carlos Cuellar (an amazing buy and would get millions for him if he were to leave) to name two but it doesn’t really matter what "outsiders" think to be honest, Zenit have been given a week to prepare for the final, Rangers ? yes you’ve guessed it, fúck all
May 3, 2008 at 16:09 #161377Jim, before I start I’d like to say that I watched the game with two Rangers fans on Thursday, and I was still the most excited person in the room when Novo stuck the last pen away. However, to claim Rangers have the players worthy of getting to the final of a competition that is no more than a notch or two below the Champions League these days is a bit hopeful to say the least IMO.
Cuellar is the type of player who will quickly become a fans’ favourite, but in reality he is a very clever player who is also extremely brave. ‘Top drawer’ he is not. And I will cut any comment on Barry Ferguson short, as I believe he is quite possibly the most overrated player ever to kick a football- barring the season before he went to Blackburn- and I quiver with rage at the fact that ‘Man of the match’ in Scotland & Rangers games has so quickly transformed into ‘Barry Ferguson of the match’!
I am delighted with Rangers’ achievements in Europe this season, but with technically being a neutral I am of the belief that they are a one-man team, and that man is Walter Smith.
May 3, 2008 at 20:52 #161420It’s not about having the players worthy of reaching a European final, it’s about the getting there with the resources you have and we have made some so called better teams look very ordinary,we had a very good team in 92 and they couldn’t reach a european final playing some great football and no-one at the time said we should’ve reached the champions league final did they? and now because we’ve reached a european final in 2008 people are niow saying we don’t deserve it – that is complete nonsense and reeks of jealousy, Man Utd and Chelsea apart as any other team in the whole of Europe if they’d like to be in the Uefa cup final and I’m pretty confident every team would say ofcourse we would.
Cuellar to me and almost every Rangers fan that I know and every Rangers fan that I know from the football forums rates Cuellar as a class act, even the guys commentating on ITV4 were saying the same.
I don’t expect Rangers to get any praise or credit where it’s due from anyone outside the Rangers family, at this moment in time every Rangers fan has a large smile on his face but most of Scotland don’t want to know – that suits me fine.
May 9, 2008 at 12:22 #162474The SFA have looked at every avenue in attempt to accomodate the moaning Rangers.
The fact of the matter is that the rules state that all final day fixtures must be played at the same time on the same day.
Cast your minds back to season 1973/74, when Celtic had to play five games in ten days in the old Scottish League Division 1 (now the SPL), and two of those were played on consecutive days (29th/30th April).
At that time, Celtic were going for the league title, the Scottish Cup and were also due to meet Atletico Madrid in the European Cup semi-final – and they still made time to play Liverpool in Ron Yeats testimonial at Anfield. Scottish Cup winners v FA Cup winners (Celtic won
).No complaints, no excuses.

May 9, 2008 at 13:16 #162485MP, there could be some truth in what you say but fitting in with the rest of Scotland? no thanks we like being who we are and we are proud of the union flag.
Rules are rules I suppose but the SFA and the SPL got together to discuss if Rangers could be given a week to prepare for the Uefa cup final and they still said no (they must have been thinking about it), there just happens to be a celtic representative on the SPL panel, that could be the answer

5 years ago Celtic were given a free week to prepare for their game against Porto.
We will get on with it and it will be much sweeter if we can beat Zenit.
May 9, 2008 at 13:47 #162489I will be shouting on the team playing Rangers – but then, being a Celtic fan, I would, wouldn’t I.

‘ Mon the Zenit !
