Seems Waipiro has run his last race in the UK and is off to Hong Kong.
The more I know the less I understand.
June 28, 2023 at 21:17 #1653803Just like his brother. I’m sure he’ll be gelded too.
June 28, 2023 at 21:37 #1653805That’s a shame. I was looking forward to seeing him race over here.
Bugger!
June 28, 2023 at 21:39 #1653806That’s so disappointing, I was looking forward to seeing him running
the rest of the season here. He’d become one of my favourites.June 29, 2023 at 00:03 #1653818I’ve just read the news and I’m sorry to hear that Waipiro is going to China to be trained for the Hong Kong Derby next year, quite a blow for Ed Walker to lose a horse with his talent, I was hoping he might go for the Eclipse next andthink he would have won it.
Hopefully he will not be gelded, why geld a horse who has shown so much talent and rule him out of perhaps running in L’Arc de Triomphe if they ever wanted to take him there in the future.
It seems the Siu family want to pursue their dream of winning the Hong Kong Derby and I hope he fulfils it for them. I’ll certainly be following his career over there.
Good luck Waipiro
Sad not to see you run anymore this this season but you are going to be a big star
in Hong Kong next year.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 29, 2023 at 07:54 #1653830He will be short odds on to be gelded, last three runnings HK Derby has had one filly and three colts . Two remain intact according to records , one retired , one still racing and Russian Emperor gelded a few races after Derby . He is by a champion out of a champion . Waipiro got no chance dodging that one imho .
June 29, 2023 at 09:00 #1653833Everything crossed he comes through as one of the few horses left entire after the HK Derby Helcat.
I would imagine he is definitely not for sale but wondered if any of the big guns came forward with offers after his impressive Hampton Court win.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 29, 2023 at 09:21 #1653835Lastest figures on internet are August 2022 . 1150 active racehorses in HK , approximately 98 per cent geldings . 25 colts, 2 fillies , 2 rigs .
Waipiro does look a very nice horse .June 29, 2023 at 09:45 #1653836Why is that the case? Is there no place for breeding farms? Or do all horses have to be bred outside of HK?
June 29, 2023 at 10:01 #1653838Hong Kong’s area is just 1,000 sq km. Surely no place for breeding. When Singapore (with similar size of Hong Kong) stops racing for building new homes, you can say it is quite lucky to have 2 racecourses in Hong Kong (especially 1 in city centre).
June 29, 2023 at 10:03 #1653839@triptych It is quite uncommon if any big guns are interested for a Group 3 winner, even at Royal Ascot. Also, Siu family would be very keen to keep Waipiro as Derby hope in Hong Kong.
June 29, 2023 at 10:33 #1653840Pure Champion who was Steinbeck at Ballydoyle raced in HK and then ended up in NZ , raced a few times and has a spot at stud .
Sweet Orange was Warning Flag in Ireland and after HK ended up at Stud in NZ but I think he’s gone to mainland China now as was not a success at stud .
Akeed Mofeed came out of HK and seems to produce the odd decent horse in OZ , so old Waipiro has a small window of hope .Plenty of ex HK horses out in OZ and NZ that get another go and pick up a few wins . There are a couple of trainers very good at getting them back in the mood , bit of time in nice green field seems to sort them out .June 29, 2023 at 10:42 #1653841Actually one I noticed back on the track last week was The Summit , 2 nd in French Derby few years back , went to HK I assume for big money ran poor . He has been gelded , had 2 and half years off . Went ok fresh up without trial , he will get a win in OZ , will need to shed some rating points but big yard has him so must be showing a glimmer of old ability .
June 29, 2023 at 13:41 #1653849Very interesting replies helcat and patrick thank you.
I know next to nothing about the horses that run in Hong Kong and their breeding operation but feel I understand it better now.Totally understand the Siu family seeing a great opportunity to win tbe Hong Kong Derby and I hope he does it for them. Perhaps we will be back here next March celebrating his win.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 29, 2023 at 13:56 #1653851I like Waipiro, but I didn’t think it was a great renewal of the Group 3 Hampton Court he won last week at Royal Ascot.
He’d have to show a lot more to earn a stud career and sadly time may have run out for him there.
I half expect nowadays any 3yo at Group 3 or just below to head out to parts of the world where they can earn so much more prize money – it’s often said if Sea Pigeon had been born in this era he’d never have seen a flight of hurdles and gone to the Far East at three.
Money talks – or rather shouts – and this is the world we now live in.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 30, 2023 at 22:57 #1653944Different distance range but i see today owners of a horse called Mogo Magic from OZ have turned down in region of 1.2 million AUD , about 700k real money . Hes gelding with two wins in country midweek NSW and one highway at Randwick a race restricted to out of City trainers . Bird in hand sometimes best but if he lives up to hype in OZ he can win that easy . But hes a long way from that a moment . In light of that Waipiro would imho worth at very least double that formwise ,
Id always take the money , years ago owners of horse called Kinane turned down silly money from HK , he had won grp3 at Randwick i think , horse couldnt pick his feet up after that , everytime he turned out peools said ” should have took the money !!!”
Mogo races today Rosehill , he had better win !!.June 30, 2023 at 23:04 #1653946The decisions many owners of racehorses make defy any attempt at logical financial analysis, but then it’s an avenue on which average returns on investment are something like 20% I recently read, so few go into it expecting to make a profit.
Racehorse ownership is evidently so intoxicating and addictive for some it can make shrewd business people behave incredibly naively, even at point of initial purchase, so it’s hardly surprising that many would refuse substantial offers of money (they don’t necessarily need) to sell their horse.
Consequently nothing any racehorse owner ever does ever surprises me – in fact, I’m more surprised at onlookers still being surprised at decisions owners make.
Work that one out!
