Entries due today/tomorrow I believe so this thread is slightly early for firm selections….
However, does anyone have any fancies for this? I’m at Ascot again for this, one of my favourite meetings of the year and I managed to pick up two of my favourite horses last year (Spanish Moon & Zaahid).
Zaahid hasnt won since a major gamble on him in this last year and I personally feel that he has a fantastic chance if he turns up this year.
Anyone else have any early selections?
May 4, 2009 at 21:28 #225643Nice selections there, Marb. Must admit I’m not too aware of either of those. Might have to look into the race a bit more nearer Saturday.
Just saw that the 5 day decs have been released and my old friend Zaahid is in there. As is Evens and Odds (who for the record looked great on Sunday)
Flowing Cape and Mister Hardy both interest me from the initial decs.
May 5, 2009 at 00:28 #225685ZAAHID, with blinkers and he will do for me! I backed him at 16/1 for the race last year, and he duly obliged! 10/1 would be nice for this years!
May 5, 2009 at 01:47 #225704I’m fairly sure Dandy Nicholls has a good record in this race. Well, I know he’s won it at least once.
Something won’t have run for 28 days, so he must have been put away for this race.
He is 5 lbs higher than winning on the Polytrack last time, but still 9 lbs lower than when coming 4th in the Wokingham 2 years ago.
The main problem is that his AW record is 3 for 3, whilst he has only won once on turf.
He is being advertised at 14/1 on the Racing Post with Blue Square, but when I went to place a bet, the market was suspended.
I can’t believe that there isn’t an ante-post market for this race on betfair.
May 5, 2009 at 23:50 #225859I have got tickets for this as well. Fair play to Totesport and the course management only £12.50 entry to the Premier Enclosure. Going to star work on the card later in the week.
May 6, 2009 at 00:36 #225871ZAAHID, with blinkers and he will do for me! I backed him at 16/1 for the race last year, and he duly obliged! 10/1 would be nice for this years!
and 10/1 i got, i doubt he will have the blinkers on though!
May 6, 2009 at 01:45 #225897Technically, if he wins TAPK I was there before you this time

Don’t worry, halfwaytoheaven, if Zaahid wins TAPK won’t mention it until this time next year
May 7, 2009 at 03:11 #226063Can anyone tell me why Prescription has halved from 10s to 5s?
Must be a decent piece of work at home?
The draw hasnt taken place yet, he hasnt run for months and his last run was when he was overturned at odds on in an AW race!
May 7, 2009 at 04:27 #226071She must have been tipped up somewhere.
She’s won a couple of 6f H’caps nicely, but the main problem is that she is by Pivotal, and has been racing on Soft ground. It is Gd to Fm at Ascot, and they have been watering.
I know this might give the impression that I’ve got a thing for Fahey, but I quite like the chances of
Fishforcompliments
. 5lbs lower than when beaten 4.5 lengths in this last year. The difference is he tends to race prominently nowadays, instead of being held up. Beaten by stablemate on reappearance, who will reoppose here.
The other one I quite like is
Arabian Spirit
, who has only raced on Gd to Fm once. I think that is just a matter of circumstance.
As I’ve named three now, including
Something
, I had better stop there.
Instead of trying to find the winner, I should really be paying attention to whether I can spot the Ayr Gold Cup winner amongst the field.
May 8, 2009 at 03:57 #226262Nicholls hasn’t declared his other 3 entries, despite saying they would also run.
He must think this is a penalty kick for Evens & Odds.
I’ll have to re-assess whether to oppose it. Luckily, I didn’t get on Something a couple of days ago, because I couldn’t.
Reassessment done. I can’t not back Fishforcompliments if it is 20 +.
May 8, 2009 at 20:56 #226405On a form line through Mister Hardy it looks like Fishforcompliments may be coming back to his best this year (and from the tail end of the last), Gerald.
He’s a consideration for me at this stage….
May 8, 2009 at 22:22 #226418I have spent the last hour studying this race and purely on handicapping
FISHFORCOMPLIMENTS 18/1 and GIGANTICUS 22/1 are very well in!
Unfortunately ZAAHID looks up against it! A 16lb turn around in the weights
between Zaahid and Giganticus and with his record at Ascot i am confidently suggesting GIGANTICUS as my 1st choice! Particularly on this ground! I have backed all three!May 8, 2009 at 23:26 #226427I’ve just spent a bit of time on this race too. Particularly as my work crowd I’m going with are relying on me for this one! Haha
If Opus Maximus runs again tomorrow he has to be in the mix with a weight of 8st10. However, I’m focusing my bets on horses drawn even more centrally.
Evens and Odds, one I’ve already backed this evening when reading he’s the only Nicholls runner, will come from a hard draw in 23. There doesnt seem to be much pace very wide but if he’s anywhere near as good as he was last week he could make these all look very silly.
Zaahid splits my decision. As much as I want to back him I find that the only reason I do want to back him is because of my loyalty. On my shortlist of 9 (I say shortlist, I mean that I havent finished whittling down yet) he’s probably the weakest.
Tylicki is in impeccable form. Almost everything he rides at the moment is getting in the frame and he is easily the one jockey you want on your horse with his 5lb claim. He’s in the perfect position drawn 17.
Blue Sky Basin would interest me if from a stronger draw but from 24 I’m reluctant to back him.
I’m suprised to be taking an interest in L’Hirondelle. When he breaks from the stalls on par with everyone else and wants to race he’s a decent horse and on par with some of the 16/1 shots in this race. He’s not a 50/1 shot.
To summarise, pending Opus Maximus’ entry I’ll be backing
Fishforcompliments
and
Evens and Odds
with a possible small bet on Opus Maximum
May 9, 2009 at 00:11 #226437Signor Peltro & Guilded Warrior for me.
Hoping for a nice day as I am going to this one.

I wouldn’t be too quick to write Zaahid off. His jockey reported that he didn’t act on the ground at Newbury – not something they’d normally do unless the horse ran well below expectations – and Angus Gold describes the ground as "all over the place" and "very strange" that day.
Prior to that, he had run the race of his life in the Lincoln, over a trip almost certainly in excess of his best, and 12/1 looks a fair price for him to show his lto running to be all wrong.May 9, 2009 at 03:29 #226454Interesting Reet….
I have a funny feeling tomorrow will be a last minute decision between Fishforcompliments and Zaahid in the betting jungle
