Quote: from reet hard on 1:23 pm on Sep. 2, 2006[br] According to the Beeb, the time of the first race was only 2.36 secs above standard, which suggests soft gound horses won’t be inconvenienced. Certainly not a time you’d expect on holding ground!
(Edited by reet hard at 1:24 pm on Sep. 2, 2006)
I’ll check this and get back to you but I’m sure the Beeb go by Raceform Median Times, which are a fair bit slower than the Standard Times. It could be the time was closer to four seconds slow.
September 2, 2006 at 13:13 #76212The figures vary. Maybe you misheard, RH, or it’s more likely the standard is the RP standard, which is different from the old Raceform Stnadard.
Anyway, at 62.36s the race was 3.66s slower than the old Raceform Standard and 0.29 slower than the Median time. 3.66s indicates very slow conditions and suggests the Sprint Cup will be about 4s slower than the old standard. If there is a tail wind then you have to wonder just how heavy the ground must be.

Well done to Reverence backers

September 2, 2006 at 13:37 #76215Good thread everyone.
I’m not really a fan of sprints (even at G1), but all this analysis made the race interesting to me.
Although most people opposed the favourite, it’s not a bad approach to oppose likely non-staying favourites in races over terrible ground.

September 2, 2006 at 13:40 #76216Is there any chance that the French won’t have a clue who this E. Alston character is, and let him go off an overly generous dividend on the PMU in the Abbaye?

4.08s as it turned out – very slow ground, likely to work out as a going allowance of about 0.7s per furlong. If there is a tail wind it must be very slow.
September 2, 2006 at 15:24 #76218Find it hard to believe there’s been a tailwind on the straight today. It’s been blowing around SW all afternoon and with the straight lying approx ESE TO WNW the wind if anything will have been side on to half-head.
Currently SW 30mph in the area
