Just read on the other forum that he’s been put down.
If this is true, then Mr Carter should be warned off, permanently.
February 10, 2007 at 22:20 #38052Disgraceful that a horse with that talent should be used & abused by someone who’s supposed to love horses RIP my friend
February 10, 2007 at 22:26 #38053
Yes, will always remember the winning run he went on with Nicholls and then laughing out loud when Timmy Murphy came with a double handful in the Champion Chase.
With the way this horse was handled this was always destined to happen. Even this week the RP website had an article on him running today with a load of the usual bulls**t
from Mr Carter.February 10, 2007 at 23:04 #38054I’m not really sure how to comment without being libellous, so i’ll just restrain. But the fact is that the horse shouldn’t have been in the race. Those outsiders being withdrawn from the Derby is an exact comparison to this. What makes this any different? Nothing IMO.
February 10, 2007 at 23:09 #38055Or Astonville and Turnium in the Champion Hurdle. The practice of running horses three stone out of their depth should be outlawed.
February 10, 2007 at 23:24 #38056
Just read that Fergus Wilson is leaving the sport at the end of the season so hopefully Carter will follow suit.
Running a no-hoper in 1 or 2 big races for the day out is one thing but to do it continuously season upon season is just ridiculous. I can remember Venn Ottery running in the Peterborough Chase when Jair Du Cochet beat Best Mate so it’s been going on for years.
Even when he ran in more appropriate races, it tended to be over 2m4f to 3m so again, the horse had no chance whatsoever.
It’s put a slight dampener on a truly fantastic day of NH racing has this:angry:
February 11, 2007 at 01:40 #38057I hate to put it like this, but now that a horse has actually died maybe the authorities will review the situation of no hopers running way out of their depth. If the horse is relying on the misfortune of other horses to run into the money, isn’t that an unpleasant thought in itself? If there was no other races for it then I could understand, but I don’t think that’s the case.
February 11, 2007 at 02:03 #38058FSL-Dr.P.Pritchard wouldn’t be happy.
bigtony,you sad man
A few questions…
Have you been drinking?
Do you know the gender of the trainer of VO?
Do you think that the owner will be upset?
Why am i wasting my time ‘talking’ to you?
Mr. Carter is certainly a rum old bugger but he does love his horses.
R.I.P Venn Ottery

Strange, whenever I’ve heard him open his mouth he comes across like he couldn’t give a flying **** about his horses.
The campaigning of Venn Ottery over the past couple of seasons would seem to back up that view.

If this was the case, Kawagino wouldn’t have been given the opportunity to run so well in last year’s champion hurdle.
February 11, 2007 at 11:48 #38061I’m gutted about losing this horse. Mr Carter should be wanred off racing asap.
His horse has shown no form in about two years, he had no right to enter the horse yesterday, let alone run him.
Completely disgusting that the authorities let this happen.
Does anyone know the physical reason why the poor boy was put down yesterday?
February 11, 2007 at 12:22 #38062That may be true dj, but the fact remains that VO had no hope in hell of being competitive yesterday. Kawingo was obviously overpriced, VO was underpriced IMO. I wouldn’t have wanted 1500/1 about him, let alone 150/1.
Is this practice of running horses out of their depth, generally, all about the privilege of being in the owners lounge for the big day? Not saying that is Mr Carter’s incentive, but generally?
February 11, 2007 at 12:41 #38063A lot of aftertiming on this thread, Jupon Vert was rated 23lbs lower than VO yesterday but no one has said he shouldn’t have run and why shouldn’t he have in any case.
People have short memories, VO less than 3 years ago was rated 10 lbs lower than yesterday and 62 lbs wrong at weights with the winner but still ran his cracker in the 2 mile champion chase. Should he have not been allowed to have run in that 2 mile champion chase?
Who’s to say running in yesterdays race had anything to do with his demise yesterday as he was never in contention and looked perfectly sound when pulled up.
February 11, 2007 at 13:23 #38064Jupon Vert isn’t owned by an ecentric though. With respect to the aftertiming claim, this thread was started on Feb 6.
February 11, 2007 at 13:24 #38065this is extremely sad if he is dead. but i cant actually find any proof that he is!?
he deserved retirement a couple of years ago. if he had stayed with nicholls i think he would have made into a top 2 mile chaser.
February 11, 2007 at 14:35 #38066i cant see any evidence that horses that are not up to the grade are in any more danger then horses that supposedly are.

February 11, 2007 at 14:54 #38067Dave, there was a report on ATR yesterday evening about it, that he had to be put down.
Everyone is talking about how the horse was rated lower a few years ago. That was a few years ago, the poor fella was 12 and had struggled to complete in a point to point last year, how can he merit running in a race of this nature?
At least Jupon Vert is still capable of winning races in his own grade, Venn Ottery would never have won a race again.
Why did he deserve to lose his life doing something he was just not capable of doing any longer?
