I am a total novice when it comes to US racing but have started to take a keen interest. No bets as yet as want to increase my knowledge first. Could you guys give me some pointers on what to look for in a horse and tracks etc.

    Thanks

    Nick

To have any chance of succeeding in betting on racing in the US you need to subscribe to either DRF.com, or Equibase.com. The former is probably the better of the two as you get access to work out times etc. without having to pay a fee.

As regard tracks you only need to know one thing; they’re all pretty much the same – extremely boring.

LGR has echoed the key component to any opinion of US racing – it truly is boring. Very rarely will races be won by tactical nous. It’s all about speed, speed and more speed until the last horse left standing wins the race.

Every track is practically an oval – the turf track always on the inside and it is ridiculously tight. Draw the outside from a barrier within 2 furlongs of a turn and forget about it.

As far as I am concerned – Australians tend to be most attracted to Hollywood Park more than any other track. Reasoning behind it, who knows? But that is a guide to what maybe most appropriate to wager on.

Plenty of emphasis is on workout times in the US. They are recorded and listed in publications the next day – EVERY work. When you notice one horse has done a bullet work, they’ve clocked the fastest time over that particular distance in the AM.

The only good thing I can say about racing in the US (aside from the bigger meetings at Santa Anita, Churchill Downs, Belmont Park etc.) is that there are rarely problems at the start; horses know why they’re there, are accompanied by a lead horse to the gate and generally waltz in without a second thought.

MDeering – Hollywood attracts Aussie and Japanese horses because of it’s geographic position making for shorter flights. Add in quarantine on site, generous travel allowances for the American Oaks/Cash Call Mile, timing of their races in relation to home seasons as well as CushionTrack for morning exercise and you’ve got a popular location.

The David Hayes filly Miss Marielle is being aimed at the Hollywood Oaks – a race in which her stablemate Anamato finished second last year.

I can offer one piece of wisdom about American racing -money talks.Have a look at the betfair market a couple of minutes before the off and occasionally it is possible to lay horses at a smaller price then the projected tote dividend. The initial reaction is that this must be a value lay but the reality is that a lot of the money on betfair is fairly hot and some of the bigger punters know they will distort the dividends if they bet directly into the pmu.

read http://www.bloodhorse.com, get a feel for their termanolgy, i still have not grasped it yet, nor their love affair wth dirt, which is rancid surface and beats the living daylights out of horses.

New York two yearold group races run in november at Aquaduct, the form is usually **** and normally needs cannning.

Watch the Hollywood Futurity ( known as the cashcall futurity ay the moment), this race is run in december at Hollywood park and a colt that runs in this race and places often goes on too be placed in the kentucky derby.

The current meet @ Keeneland is worth a look… :D
    Here is the link: http://keeneland.com/
The free video feed offers players the opportunity to watch live racing.

    Cal-Racing is another excellent resource.
    http://calracing.com/
All California tracks; including replays and live racing.
This is also a free service… and a valuable handicapping tool.

 …very sorry to read that some of the folks here do not care for US racing.
Check out the links above… I think you will enjoy our racing in the colonies.

Best wishes and may your next wager be a winning one!

Badactor, rest assured that there are plenty of TRFers old and new who enjoy racing over your patch. Hopefully coming over in a few weeks myself.

You have to remember that the collective TRF collective psyche is currently struggling to leave steeplechase mode behind. It’s a bit grumpy at the minute; like a grizzly on the brink of hibernation, not to rise till Chepstow in October. Those that are staying awake for the summer are struggling to assess formlines without letters.

Perhaps if you e-mailed the Churchill Downs authorities to stick eight dirty great obstacles in the backstretch, the thread might have received some positive notices. Agree about Keeneland: a fine racecourse.

    Best of luck. Max

Saratoga is the greatest meet in the world. I’m biased as I live 200 yards from the track :P

Cheltenham and Deauville run it close

I like Saratoga and in particular the Turf Writers Gold Cup, a lovley jumps race.

Also Churchill Downs and Belmont Park on the Thursday before the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes as they both have a steeplechase.

Sadly Neil they don’t run those races on the Thursday before the Derby and the Belmont any more.

Can’t remember the last time they had them but Belmont was given a Grade 1 chase in late September last year
