I’m sure many of you have heard of the show ‘ upping the ante’ created by Racing Post. Has been going a few seasons as far as I am aware.
I don’t know about you guys but I think it’s just a superb show, it’s on YouTube every week from October to the Cheltenham festival.
I just think the show is a terrific watch and the format of it all is superb and the hosts are great. David Jennings and Gavin Lynch.
Of course I don’t agree with all of their selections but they do a great analysis and it’s just a a brilliant watch.
I know Racing TV do a similar one called road to Cheltenham and I believe attheraces have recently started one now as they seem popular.
Anyone who hasn’t seen them then I fully recommend them especially if you have Cheltenham fever like me !! It’s on racing post YouTube channel
December 1, 2020 at 15:44 #1512732The ATR version, Off The Fence, is held back by the presenter, Vanessa Ryle. She is terrible.
December 1, 2020 at 17:43 #1512749Yeah, enjoy it, it’s a good watch.
Could do without the “questions from the crowd” bit, with most questions of little relevance to an Antepost show.
It’ll no doubt disappear up it’s own backside as it grows in popularity, with the Charity Bike Ride a bit of a warning sign, but for the time being, it’s very good.
December 1, 2020 at 19:15 #1512759Yes its very well done
Road to Cheltenham is good too, listening to Ruby’s breakdown of the weeks best races can never be a bad thing
December 3, 2020 at 11:29 #1512870I like watching it sometimes. Gavin comes across with a bit more reasoning behind his tips and they are more predictable, whereas Dave is more chancey with his selections and unlikely to make much gain, but its a good mix of opinions for the viewers to watch even if you don’t agree with them.
November 9, 2021 at 17:09 #1566983The show returns tonight. I hope that they haven’t tinkered with the format too much.

Bit harsh. They raised a load of money and loads of racing people got involved. I know some people think “meh it’s a tipping show just stick to racing and forget chatting about a garda from Cork who had cancer and has horses in training and did the traffic control for your bike ride”. But that forges the bonds. If you were a trainer, who do you want to talk to at a stable tour- David Jennings sitting in Henry de Bromhead’s kitchen drinking tea, chatting about their respective Georgias, praising Rachel’s bike skills and enthusing about their favourite horses or some pundit type dully reading out a list of horses’ names and waiting for a stock response for each one. As Jenny Pitman once said there’s more to life than training horses to run around in a circle in a field.
November 10, 2021 at 12:21 #1567018Agreed Grass, in hindsight that doesn’t read so good, does it.
No issues with the bike ride at all, it was more the danger of them branching out unnecessarily into other areas, but definitely point taken, and a bit harsh.
November 12, 2021 at 14:03 #1567207This will be my 3rd season watching also the road to cheltenham, Ruby is brilliant.
November 23, 2021 at 20:07 #1568773Off The Fence is back on ATR.
Same lineup as last season: Barry Geraghty and Tony Keenan are excellent but how on Earth has the truly dreadful Vanessa Ryle kept her spot?
