What is the biggest race on the flat in the UK as far as betting turnover is concerned Tote and Bookmaker wise ?
And how much would be bet annually on the flat in the UK ?
December 22, 2008 at 06:20 #198602Is this sort of information readily available over there ?

The Derby and The Cheltenham Gold Cup would be he two races over here. Most of our national newspapers print sweepstakes for those two races
and the ante post market for those two races runs all year.Bookmakers would never divulge exactly what they took on any race in total.

quote]The Cheltenham Gold Cup is a jumps race, not a flat race, and anyway the top jumps race for betting turnover, and by a very wide margin, is still the Grand National.
Getting back to the questions posed, the top flat race for betting turnover for bookies remains the Derby, but regarding the Tote, it may be being closely challenged, if not surpassed, by big handicaps like the Cambridgeshire, Cesarewitch, Royal Hunt Cup, Stewards Cup and the Ayr Gold Cup.
December 22, 2008 at 14:37 #198625Most of those races wouldn’t come close to the Derby in terms of tote turnover.
They publish the figures each year around this time in the Racing Post (or is it the end of the tote’s financial year?). You could wait for that or wait for the tote to reply to an e-mail enquiry from you. The latter would probably take forever.
Group One races are much higher turnover on the tote these days than big handicaps due to co-mingling.
The hierarchy probably looks something like this
1. Derby
2. Ascot Gold Cup
3. Other Royal Ascot Group Ones
4 Other Royal Ascot Thurday races
5 Royal Ascot races outside Thurdsay
6 Other Epsom Group Ones
7 Other Derby Day races
8 Other Group OnesYork Ebor meeting is probably best of the rest, followed by Glorious Goodwood.
