I’m away for a couple of weeks so I’m going to PM Matron the answer.
But, in the meanwhile as an extra clue the result of what I was doing was a calculation.
Also, perhaps unsurprisingly the whole experience was also somewhat spiritual.
July 15, 2010 at 21:02 #306732calculating the correct time for prayer.
July 15, 2010 at 21:11 #306735Are you building a scale model of Stonehenge in your garden or are you creating a "space" for ritualistic sacrifice ?

July 15, 2010 at 21:35 #306740Drawing a parabola???
July 15, 2010 at 21:58 #306748During the fine weather last week I was in the garden with a piece of string tied between two garden chairs. I also had with me a piece of wood with notches in and an egg timer.
Q. What was I doing?
A mans Erection can grow an extra notch at around 3pm! Surely you wasn"t doing that in a public place Pete!
July 16, 2010 at 04:37 #306770I’ll have to check that out this afternoon.
July 16, 2010 at 07:41 #306774Measuring the height of your house?
July 16, 2010 at 09:40 #306790Answer, no – all wrong at the moment.

July 16, 2010 at 12:12 #306819Thanks Matron
Right, we are just off to Drone country

But, one last clue Here
btw, to be precise is a tangential measurement I’m making.
July 16, 2010 at 13:02 #306825does sound like its noting/ tracing the sun’s – or the moon’s – path across the garden.
couple that with this extract from P’s recent opening post on the Victorian Kitchen Garden thread:
"…For my part, I’ve always fancied the notion of building some proper Hot Frames and this programme has inspired me to do so." [the spiritual part?]
so – working out optimal location and glass-angle for his Hot Frames?
July 24, 2010 at 16:46 #308283Blimey, I can’t believe no one guessed it – so I’ll give the answer and set another question:
A – I was recording the distance a shadow cast from the string onto the wood moved in a set period of time in order to calculate the tangential speed of the earths rotation at my latitude.
New Question:
Q – Which Derby winner and subsequent leading Stallion was awarded the race (The Derby) in the Court of Exchequer?
Btw, Corm why would anyone want to measure the height of their house? Are you mad?
July 25, 2010 at 19:29 #308650Btw, Corm why would anyone want to measure the height of their house? Are you mad?

Says the man "recording the distance a shadow cast from the string onto the wood moved in a set period of time in order to calculate the tangential speed of the earths rotation at my latitude"
July 25, 2010 at 22:47 #308713I was recording the distance a shadow cast from the string onto the wood moved in a set period of time in order to calculate the tangential speed of the earths rotation at my latitude.
and did it turn out the same as multiplying the speed at the equator (say 1,040 mph) by the cosine of your latitude ?
July 26, 2010 at 00:16 #308734To be honest, if i had a look at this question again, I still couldn’t give the answer.
Way out of my depth!!!!!!!
