It struck me that 6 points for Sprinter Sacre’s win was a bit small (winners should be encouraged) so did wonder whether it would be a good idea to have an earlier cut off point for odds-on horses Nathan. Possibly 2/5+ so it would be…

2/5+…….8 for win…….3 for 2nd…….2 for 3rd……1 for 4th.

I think 4, 3 and 2 are too high for 2nd, 3rd and 4th with a 30/100 shot if there’s a full cut off of 40/85 Nathan, but may be have an earlier cut off point of 9 points for

You make an excellent point BR, well, I am not entirely sure what you mean.

So if you’d chosen an 11/10 shot as a nap and it won – you’d get 21 bonus points added to your 21 points win, 42 points in all. If your 110/10 shot finished 2nd it would be 8 added to 8 = 16 points, 3rd 6 + 6 = 12 points and 4th 4 + 4 = 8 points.
If you take a chance and pick a 14/1 shot as a nap you’d get 125 + 125 = 250 points for a win, 50 + 50 = 100 points for 2nd, 37 + 37 = 74 points for 3rd and 25 + 25 = 50 points for 4th.

Or

Would it be fairer to get the full amount of double points for only winning "naps"? So 2nd placed 11/10 gets 40% of 8 = 3.2 so 3 added to 8 = 11 points in all, 3rd 30% of 6 = 1.8 so 2 added to 6 = 8 points in all, and 20% of 4 = 0.8 + 4 = 4.8 so 5 points in all.
14/1 second place gets 40% of 50 = 20 + 50 = 70 points in all. 3rd 30% of 37 = 11.1 so gets 11 + 37 = 48 points in all. 4th place 20% of 25 = 5 + 25 = 30 points in all.

Might be fairer than option 1, but not sure if it would be a little tricky for the scorer and take more time.

Or

Is it fairer for "naps" to count for winners only. If it’s the supposed "best bet" – should placed horses get any bonus at all?

The idea of 2 horses for one race a day suits my way of betting well Nathan. Might be something to put to the great and good of TRF just before the competition starts, get everyone’s opinion.

I’ll add the 5th to my table with scores in brackets so people don’t get confused.

Think you’re right Nathan, Naps for win only is both fairer and easier to score.

Winner –

The person with the highest overall score from the 3 days. If tied combined scores of 3 naps, if still tied highest score in Grand National, if still tied highest day 1 score, still tied day 2 etc. If still tied a 3 minute boxing round.

NEW Rules –

2 Selections in 1 race, 1 in the rest:
Each day you pick 2 selections in 1 race of your choice and 1 selection per race in all other races, plus reserves in case of non-runners (please do not edit posts after the start of the first race if you need to make any alterations make a new post).

Nap Selection:
Pick 1 nap per day, if your nap wins it scores double points.

All Selections for the day should be posted before the first race. The odd time when someone forgets to post until after the first race could be allowed at the scorer’s discretion (obviously selections for races already run do not count)… but do not make a habit of doing so.

Points are scored for:
Under 5 runners – Winner only to count.
5-7 – Winner and 2nd.
8-15 – Winner, 2nd and 3rd.
16+ – Winner, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
Grand National – Winner, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.

Points Scored to SP’s as below –

Second place gets 40% (0.4) of win points, Third 30% (0.3), Fourth 20% (0.2) and for Grand National only 5th 10% (0.1).

I’ve been thinking about allowing for 1 race each day (any race, up to individual) where you can pick 2 horses, just to mix things up a bit, what do you think?

I’ve been thinking about this idea Nathan. In many ways I think it’s a good idea and suits me (personally) very well. However, having looked at people’s selections in the Cheltenham competition, it seems a lot of TRFers find it hard to remember their NAP. Do you think a second selection in one race will be remembered by enough people Nathan?

Do wonder Nathan whether we should change the places to field numbers. It seems to me in small fields it greatly favours big priced horses, for them to get a place and (comparitively) big rewards. eg "paying" 3 places for 7 runners in the Arkle and a 33/1+ scoring 66 points for 3rd. Similarly for the Queen Mother; where it is 20/1 bar two and a 25/1 shot scores 54 points for 3rd in a 7 runner race.

Possibly…
5 or less 2 places.
8 to 11 runners 3 places.
12+ runners 4 places.

Or

Alternatively, because an odds-on favourite makes it easier to find a big priced horse to place in the first 3 or 4… Have a rule where any 6+ runner race with an odds-on favourite has 1 place fewer to count.

So for any race with an odds-

against

favourite:
Points are scored for:
2 places in 5 runner or less fields.
3 places in 6 to 9 runner fields.
4 places in 10 or more runner fields…

And for races with an odds-

on

favourite:
2 places in 9 runner or less fields.
3 places in 10 or more runner fields.

Is your point system set up as for normal betting, if so we should just go the norm, ie –

under 5 – 1 place
5-7 – 2 places
8-15 – 3 places
16+ – 4 places
National – 5 places

Yeah, I noticed the odd nap missing.
I’d still be happy to go 2 runners in any 1 race a day, if people cant be bothered to read the rules it’s their own fault, but understand where your coming from. I’ll leave it all to you Ginge to work out everything with rules and points, I’ll just score it……..
