Himself,I’d bet me and Ginge strapped together in a 3-legged race could give you a 20m head start and still beat you over 25m as you are as quick as your wit!!

Wise old man once said : know thine enemy well before first declaring war on them.

Is 25m your optimum distance, TAPK , or as I suspect, your very limit ?

A wiser old man said ‘Actions Speak louder than words’! Sprinting was never my forte but I have clocked the same time as Paula Radcliffes 2hr 15min 25sec for the London Marathon!!

Whereas Ginger’s more of a sprinter. I clocked him down in the betting jungle on Wednesday he got to one bookie and was about to part with 237 points when he heard another bookie shouting out a better price on the same horse so he legs it over to the other side only for the price to drop and the bookie he was going to place his bet with first was now biggest price so he runs all the way back only for the same thing to keep happening. He was running from side to side like a lit candle in the wind only for the bloody race to start without him.

Toronado is better because High Chaparral is a Coolmore sire.Whereas Dawn Approach is owned by the drug lord.So naturally the Tipperary horse is better than the Dubai one.Any racing fan can see that.Do I make myself clear? Crystal clear?

Here’s a suggestion : rather than resorting to the old fisticuffs method of resolving one’s differences; methinks dear old Ginge and the self-proclaimed ante post king, should instead race each other over a distance of say… 70 metres, as I fear the traditional 100 would be stretching both gentlemen’s stamina limitations to the max. I would willingly bet that one or both would fall over during the course of the race, and most definitely well before the finishing line.

What odds on the outcome, Ginge – on the winner of the race, on either one, or both, staying the distance – or one or both of you rotund/unfit gentlemen "pulling up " falling on your fat backsides, collapsing, or even, a dead-heat ?

I would pay good money to see this.

That is some coincidence H. Today of all days.

I’d love to lay you that bet of us "both would fall over during the course".

    "What odds on the outcome"?

    1-100 Gingertipster
    80/1 Gord

    I’ve seen the fattie!

    …But forget the "70m" and let’s do a whole circuit of a racecourse! :P

Went to Newbury Races today and planned going for a run on the way home. But after the last race I thought why bother finding anywhere else? Changed in to my running gear and at 6:03pm started my Garmin Forerunner watch. 22.29 mins later I’d done a full circuit, 1.86 miles (without stopping).

Let’s have a race Gord! Anything from 1 to 5 miles is ok with me. Anyone stopping to a walk is disqualified!

I keep hearing and reading that Dawn Approach would win everytime in a eye ball to eye ball duel to the line. I said to Gord on my trip to Nottingham that Toronado should go wide and not get into a battle with Dawn Approach and that is the right tactic to use as Dawn Approach is a lion but if Toronado had no option ie was running up the rail and Dawn Approach loomed up from the two pole to join him make no mistake Toronado will battle, he’s a bull of a horse himself and at Royal Ascot when they did go eye ball to eye ball Toronado held his own and only lost on the bob it could have easily had been the other way around.

As for this other duel it would all depend who wins the pacemaker race if Sofie gets to the front Ginger wins if Hayley gets to the front TAPK wins.

If Hayley led Nathan, she’d win. Both myself and Gord would be so fixated with a certain "view", we’d forget it was a race.

Based on their facial physiques ( and no disrespect to both those lovely gentlemen ), I can safely say that over any sprint distance, I would beat ( nay, annihilate  ) those dour stayers, Ginge & TAPK, even if I was pulling a tractor tyre. :P

Facial physiques can be deceptive. :)
That picture was 18 months ago too.
    Are you a runner H?
I took up running a couple of years ago to keep my diabetes in check. Never been "overweight" but my first "run" had to stop after 50 yards, knackered! Began by jogging 50 yards then walking 200 yards – 6 times. Gradually built it up from there and now can run 5 miles without stopping with a fair amount of muscle in legs. (Any 5 year old could beat me in an arm wrestling contest!).

If you are a runner H, I can highly recommend a runners watch, tells me the gradients, speed, splits, pace etc of each run. Found the gradients of Newbury Racecourse very interesting. My usual run is around 3 undulating miles and do between 6 and 9 miles a week. You may be right though H, am more middle-distance than "sprinter".

All joking aside; fair play to you Ginge. Keep at it – it can only be beneficial. Steady and gradual is the way; that is, until you reach a pace you are most comfortable with – but never over exert yourself just for the sake of an extra half second or so.

Yes, I was a fair ( ish ) sprinter in my day, Ginge – but only when I wasn’t showing off my silky skills on the football pitch. I dabbled with athletics for a brief period of time.

I’m very much in the CC category. The staying game is a definite no-no for me – 400m is my very limit.

I was most effective over 100m and I can still leave my middle-aged, beer bellied friends trailing in my wake – but then, to be fair, they are carrying many more extra pounds overweight than me. :P

I very much adhere to the old maxim ( if there is one  ) that racehorses and humans should compete over the distance which suits them best. :)

Did you ever play for Glasgow Rangers Himself? Good to see you ‘open up’ a bit,you were always a bit of a ‘Dark horse’ on here who never really posted more than a sentance.I’ll concede to running as I bloody hate it,its still the best exercise for building stamina but I dont need stamina,if I haven’t knocked you out within 5 secs then I’m in trouble!!

No TAPK, fortunately enough, I did not play for Glasgow Rangers : my persuasion towards the green and white half side of the city – and coupled with my attending the "wrong school" – precluded me from ever doing so. I look upon it as a blessing in disguise.

So you are a bit of a pugilist, TAPK. Good stuff. I do like the fight game myself, and take a very keen interest in the history of the sport, although I’m very much a writer, not a fighter. :)

I’m sure you would knock me out within 2 seconds, let alone 5, but first, you’d have to catch me – therefore it looks as though I’m quite, quite safe.

I would be happy with Toronado on a higher rating…
However "better" is difficult to define and somewhat subjective

Well, well well, who’d have believed me and the man ‘Himself’ actually share the same interest in Football and Fighting.I too am a ‘Feenyan’, a Non religious one mind and have supported Celtic since 1974 when I first moved to Scotland.Do you remember the ‘Danny Mcgrain’ era? The Peter Latchfords in goal, the Billy Mcneils and Lou Macari’s? Legends of the club.As for Boxing I was a big fan of Ken Buchanan,Alan Minter and Nigel Benn..Do you agree the worst ever fighter from these shores apart from Audley Harrison was Richard Dunne??…..Geez he was bad.Do you remember a guy called Chris Pyatt?,Potential was there!

This is probably not the thread to continue this debate… but hey ho.. :?

I remember Pyatt losing to the tremendous Steve Collins. Dunne was a good indicator of how bad the standard of British heavyweight boxing was at that time – but at least he can say he was once a punchbag for Ali.

Best boxer ever : that’s an easy one – Sugar Ray Robinson. 8)

Do I remember those Cetic names ? Of course. I have attended many hundreds of Celtic matches throughout the decades, including seeing the Lisbon Lions in their hey day – although I wasn’t in Lisbon, I saw them a few weeks earlier when they beat Aberdeen 2-0 in the SC final, when the same 11 played. I have seen them all, from Jimmy Johnstone , Bobby Murdoch, Billy McNeill and Bobby Lennox, to Danny McGrain, George Connelly and my own hero, Kenny Dalglish – a real class act. I was there at Hampden ( 1965 ) when Jock Stein won his 1st ( Scottish )cup with Celtic, through to his last trophies in 1977 ( league and Cup double when Latchford featured ). I was there on the Monday evening in May, 1979 when the 10 men beat Rangers to win the league have been faithful " through and through " ever since. :
