Just been to Racing Post website and it says that Tony Dobbin will reitre from race riding at Carlisle on Thursday.
After that he will be going to Kevin Ryans and Jonjo O’Neill to learn about training and will be taking an assistant role alongside Rose Davidson when she becomes a trainer.

A good jockey Tony Dobbin and will be sorley missed on the northern circuit but it gives Fearghal Davis a chance to shine at Penrith
April 4, 2008 at 21:15 #155937I think he has every chance of bowing out with another National winner under his belt.
April 4, 2008 at 21:46 #155951Agree, have had a go on Point Barrow, would like to see him going out on a high…
April 4, 2008 at 22:10 #155964The yard is being built at a place called North Hazelrig[g] in Northumberland…..really bleak and difficult to find; the Wuthering Heights of training establishments.
April 8, 2008 at 12:56 #156877Dobbs and rose will be some team. with there backing of her father. Best of luck to them they are both great people.
good luck
April 8, 2008 at 19:44 #156949Shame, Rose is looking allot better on a horse these days, she is much stronger and less flappy in a drive.
April 10, 2008 at 15:46 #157263Another for rthe "story" punters as Dobbs wins his own farewell race and the rider on the second is referred to HQ on a suspicion of schooling in public…
April 10, 2008 at 16:05 #157272If you check out the trainers long term record with chasers, it seems unlikely that they do any schooling in private!

I don’t know who the stewards are at Carlisle but they should be relieved of their positions immediately.
That has got to be one of the most stupid decisions I have ever seen.
The young jockey gave the horse every chance to win and he simply wasn’t good enough.
He lost all chance he had when he ploughed through the 3rd last and no way could he ever have won.
What should have been a nice send of for a guy who has been a great servant to racing, was marred by these idiots.
They are lucky Carlisle isn’t the wild west or they would have been found this morning hanging from a tree somewhere……..silly twats!!!!!
April 11, 2008 at 01:40 #157341Good luck to Tony in his new venture. Always seemed to do me a favour when I needed it when visiting Perth, top jockey there. A bit surprised that he didn’t bow out at the Perth Festival in a couple of weeks time. Hope I’m not in trouble this year, no Dobbs to bail me out!
April 11, 2008 at 03:18 #157343FoF, you’re very much in the minority there mate ~ young McAllister was desperate not to win (how embarrassing would that have been) and looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but on Tony Dobbin’s tail down the straight. I think he was in an unenviable position btw, but it was a shocker.
April 11, 2008 at 06:47 #157349Nice to see him retire at a place he quite clearly likes. They seem to have a decent plan for the future. Good luck to them.
These last races are normally benefits not only for the rider, but sometimes for the punter as well. When I heard he was retiring at Carlise, it was almost taken as read that he would go out on a winner. I would have had a blind bet myself, but for the price. I think an unenviable position for McAllister sums it up nicely.
It does remind me of an occasion when it didn’t work out that way, & cost me. It was when Jonathon Lower was due to retire from riding. I was certain that M.Pipe would put him on a winner or two before he packed up. I seem to remember having quite a few bets on Pipe/Lower horses that never won. I think in the end I gave up before Lower did. If it was in these days of betting exchanges, I’d probably be making some rash allegations about them!
April 11, 2008 at 07:18 #157353Good luck to Tony Dobbin but it is surely no surprise whatsoever that he went out on a winner – it is almost an unwritten rule of the weighing room, especially with the popular jocks.
The major difference on this occasion is the execution was somewhat clumsy with young Mr McAlister not having the experience or wherewithal to carry it it off properly – my suspicion is he panicked when he found himself in such close proximity to Dobbin and he did not want to face the reception he would have received had he done Dobbin on the line.
Connor O’Dwyer’s swansong at Fairyhouse the other week was also, in my opinion, badly executed, although it was not so blatant in that the stewards chose not to look too closely.
At least Pat Eddery looked to be trying on Northern Fleet when Fujiyama Crest won the seventh leg for Frankie at Ascot.
April 11, 2008 at 07:39 #157354Paul,
I agree with you.
No doubt Michael Mc Alister will be rewarded with a winning ride once Rose and Tony get training!
When jockeys make a return to the saddle after long injuries is another fact to follow.
Declan Murphy did it on a horse that never made the running but given an easy lead he had a line of horses following him home with no one ever making a move to overtake!
Fankie Dettori did it after the air crash.
I think Ray Cochrane also did it after the same airplane crash.Timmy Murphy had his first ride after leaving prison and lo and behold a winning one!
There have been many others.
One would have thought that they would not be race fit after long lay offs.Mick Fitz could be the next one if he resumes riding.
