So, the Tommy Whittle Chase is no longer good enough to merit its own thread in the Big Races folder.

    Nowadays it is a Class 2, 0-145 H’cap.

I’ve just looked back on the SportingLife website.

In 1994 Chatam won a 3 horse race, in which Jodami UR

In 1995 One Man won a 5 horse race.

Looks like it was abandoned in 1996

In 1997 The Grey Monk won a 4 horse race.

With small fields, I suppose the change to a handicap was inevitable, a pity it couldn’t be a little bit more than this.

I would love D’Argent to run well, but King in Trainer’s Comments has said the horse met with a training setback, and it looks like it is being aimed at that race at Warwick in January again.

Gerald, out of interest, where did you read Alan’s comments regarding D’Argent? ? ?

Reason i ask is i saw D’Argent recently, and he was fine, so unless he has had his training setback more recently, i cant think when he would have sustained it.

It is a massive ask to run at the top of the handicap like D’Argent needs to do today, but those at the top of the handicap seem to run well in the race.

The Grey Monk was Dobbin’s idea of the best horse he ever rode. Shame the horse seemed to be permanently crocked.

I May have been a bit free and easy with my words – the setback was a couple of months ago.

    D’Argent
“I want to get a prep run into him before going back to Warwick for the race he won last year. He suffered a setback a couple of months ago, which is why he hasn’t been out yet, and may just be vulnerable to something with a bit of toe.” – Alan King, trainer

There’s always Warwick – but everyone will be on him that day.
