Another classic Thommo commentary in the 6.50 at Musselburgh. He said his monitor had gone off and he waffled for about a furlong.
Couldn’t he have just picked up his binoculars and looked out of the commentary box?
September 11, 2021 at 20:05 #1560169At least the legend had more of an excuse with this commentary:

September 12, 2021 at 09:18 #1560226Some slight misunderstanding here, Thommo doesn’t do commentaries. What he does do is an entirely different art form, basically talking non stop while the race takes place, employing a small collection of standard phrases and cliches.
The equine equivalent of ‘Just A Minute’, except that Thommo would be persistently challenged for repetition.
September 12, 2021 at 09:49 #1560229Sorry, but I won’t hear a word against Derek Thompson.
Criticising “Tommo” for not being a serious commentator (or a serious anything) is like criticising a Butlins Red Coat for not having developed a Covid vaccine.
Derek is a “light entertainment” GOD.
He still makes me laugh after all these years.
Turned 70 and he’s still at it!
Legend.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 13, 2021 at 07:30 #1560360A leg end in his own mind.
I first heard Derek doing a radio commentary on show-jumping and I thought at the time he was quite entertaining. Of course, as it was radio I had no idea how accurate or factual it was.
As Mr. Potts has inferred, every Thommo commentary is the same and just the names of the horse are altered.

Really hoping William Cox jockey on Cadeaux D’or is okay after an horrific fall as his horse seemed to stumble during the latter part of the race.
The other horses had no chance to avoid him.Tommo mistakenly called Bague D’or as the fallen horse and never corrected his mistake during the race it was race calling at it’s worst.
All thoughts with William Cox that he is ok.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...October 15, 2021 at 15:31 #1563345Thommo is commentating at Fakenham. I have lost count of the number of times he has told us in commentary that it is Sam Twiston Davies’s birthday today.
October 15, 2021 at 17:01 #1563354He is appalling, every cliché in the book, he always says “all going well, as they should be at this stage of the race”, not forgetting constant reminding that Sam Twist on-Davies is having a birthday. His speaking voice is awfully blurred these days.
October 15, 2021 at 17:28 #1563360After the odds on chance hacked up in the first, he treated us to a “won like an odds on favourite should”.
I do like Derek. He is a nice fellow and a good presenter but not a good race commentator.
At least Sam Twiston Davies did ride a birthday winner, in rather dramatic circumstances.
October 16, 2021 at 03:57 #1563416And in the 3.23 at Fakenham, Tommo mentioned on several occasions that Tom Buckley, who was riding Midnight Jewel “Was born in Devon”. :/
October 16, 2021 at 07:22 #1563421Tbf to Tommo, it can’t be easy filling the commentary in for 6-7 minutes in 3/4 runner races. Plus there’s always a mute button on your remote. I think Ian Davies uses it
