A year ago today Toast Of New York wins a class 5 race at Wolverhampton. Today he comes second by a short head in the Breeders Cup classic beating a Kentucky Derby and Preakness stakes winner. All weather racing really is rubbish isn’t it ?
Well done to all concerned with the horse. Superb stuff.
November 2, 2014 at 01:09 #494233Came very close. I wonder whether that’ll make Spencer feel more or less happy with his retirement decision.
November 2, 2014 at 01:19 #494237I was at Leicester when he made his debut……

Great run, was cheering him on but the winner was very game and although the Toast didn’t quite do it I’m pleased that Baffert has finally won the big one.

It is a complete and utter anomaly, but then again, everything starts as an anomaly.
How long before we have a European AW G1? It seems inevitable for the same reason turf racing was given main-stage treatment in their showcase event.
November 2, 2014 at 09:05 #494255Good point, BH.
We often accuse the American’s of being insular, but they cater for both turf and dirt performers at their championships, and I still rate the Breeders Cup as the most enjoyable thoroughbred event the global flat code has to offer.
I never criticise Channel Four racing because we should appreciate any such coverage on terrestrial television, but I’ m always impressed with the production and presentation efforts for the Breeders Cup. American racing focus on both the human and equine stories, and do it with such an analytical passion. It’s the little things too, like footage of the horses in their stable during the broadcast.
As for TONY. I know I wasn’t the only one screaming as he entered the stretch, even though little or no money was down. You knew something special could happen when Spencer looked over his shoulder coming round the final bend.
A great tactical ride. I notice Baffert somewhat complained about his manoeuvre at the start in his defence of his winner. Spencer caught the home-based boys napping and caused marginal interference, if any.
I hope Osbourne will have the chance to prove himself further after an immaculate effort with this horse. An articulate, passionate and thoroughly decent chap.
Well done, Jamie’s.
November 2, 2014 at 09:45 #494260Possibly Jamie Spencers greatest ride!Definitely Jamie Osbornes finest hour and yet both in defeat, thats the size of the occasion.
November 2, 2014 at 10:37 #494274Given that we tend to go on about history when it comes to racing [well, I do anyway] our racing on turf and steeplechasing came from our culture and environment so it’s only right that Americans would want dirt racing because that’s where their racing began way back.
November 2, 2014 at 11:29 #494290I personally thought Spencer’s effort was a bit tame – constantly twitching and adjusting himself during the race. He looked nervous to me and I think the horse may have picked up on it. Also, I only counted 5 whip strikes from spencer in the straight. The winner received 7.
November 2, 2014 at 12:05 #494296Thought Toast of New York was ridden in a very similar way to the UAE Derby. This was a fantastic effort by all connections
and the jockeyship was exemplary.November 2, 2014 at 12:09 #494297A year ago today Toast Of New York wins a class 5 race at Wolverhampton. You can’t compare AW racing to turf over here with turf to dirt over there. Turf racing is bigger over there than most think. There are some huge turf races throughout the year. Their Horse Of The Year ( which is very prestigious over there)for the past two years was primarily a turf horse.

A legitimate point but it’s worth bearing in mind that in relative terms, AW racing in Evrope is still very much in it’s infancy.
