In my opinion, comparing Secretariat to Frankel – or any other European equine megastar is both pointless and meaningless. Suffice to say Frankel retired undefeated, whereas Secretariat retired having lost on five occasions.
As for the mile and half argument. It is ludicrous and disingenuous to simply dismiss or not acknowledge the 12 furlong distance as the pre-eminent test for 3 year old plus European thoroughbreds. The Derby is considered THE major test for three year old colts ( and fillies ) and the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe is still the most prestigious Group 1 race for all ages in Europe – and rightly so.
The fact that Frankel, and indeed Brigadier Gerard, did not contest either great race, does in no way diminish their greatness in any shape or form. However, had both been able to win one or either of those races, there is no question that their star would rise even higher in the echelons of racing folklore.
