Im sure that given the attention racehorses get these days, that Tidal Bay would have had things like back checked, teeth looked at, etc… on more than 1 occasion, so i would have thought if he did have a problem with vertebrae or other areas of his back, it would have been highlighted by a chiropractor before now.

He’s just never learned to jump fences properly, and was a risky carriage even when winning 5/6 in his novice season.
Maybe PN can work the oracle where HJ couldn’t (Tidal Bay has already had the mandatory breathing op), but you’d suspect the horse is too long in the tooth to learn new ways.January 3, 2012 at 04:15 #385423Tidal Bay is Tidal Bay and at his age not even PN Ruby or anyone will change him. No doubt he’ll take it into his head to win a race or two again then go back to his old ways.
All things considered especially the fact he appears to be a complete loon, the horse that is, HJ won 11 races from 31 starts with him against some of the best in training and won 1/2 million pounds in prize money under some great rides from Denis O’reagan.
He ran up a sequence which was broken when none other than Ruby Walsh rode him which is a bit ironic
"Considering who trained him" is a little bit below the belt
January 3, 2012 at 10:28 #385433Cannot believe a couple of writers have said his jumping ability is suspect when he’s a former Arkle winner
Bad jumpers dont win Arkle’s
I remember when the horse ran away with a big hurdle race at
Cheltenham 3 or 4 years ago at a big price. On pulling up the jockeys interview with Channel Four went somewhere along the lines of "there were not many Arkle winners in that race"As Calgary Bay did this weekend he’ll win a chase this season somwewhere.

This race was the Cleeve Hurdle and in fact was 2010 when he won it. Check out who he beat.

Can’t believe there sre still people around who don’t question his jumping.
January 3, 2012 at 14:57 #385453It could be that he knows perfectly well how to jump but resents a jockey being on his back. He may just be doing it to scare the living daylights out of his passenger!

Not great is it? He’s got a terrible head carriage but his jumping probably isn’t as bad as it is unsightly
When he won the Arkle what sticks in my mind most is how awful he looked jumping the last two fences.
However he’s never fallen in his life and it’s not his jumping that causes him to drop out of races. I think he has attitude problems and if he was human he’d probably have had psychiatric help by now.

Given the number of employees we come across who have "attitude problems" or "appear reluctant on occasion" most of the country would need to be needing psychiatric treatment.
January 3, 2012 at 22:48 #385500Tidal Bay was a poor(ish) jumper of fences as a novice chaser until putting in better rounds at Cheltenham and Aintree. Jumping isn’t great now, but plenty of other horses are just as bad and they still win from time to time. No excuse.
Tidal Bay’s high head-carriage isn’t a new thing either, even going back to hurdling days. Isn’t always, but often a sign of "temperament" or impending temperament. Tidal Bay’s "quirks" took time to manifest themselves in to temperament.
Value Is EverythingJanuary 24, 2012 at 21:39 #388141….and that race will be Argento Chase this Saturday. Grand Crus will be found out as a novice and Captain Chris another horse I like with the same pedigree outstayed by Tidal in the last 50 yards.
And we’ll all love it!
January 24, 2012 at 21:56 #388146He usually runs well at the meeting, so it will be unwise to dismiss him as no doubt many people will!
January 25, 2012 at 10:15 #388179Got to have a soft spot for Tidal Bay.
Lovely horse, and you know he will run his race and still be running on at the end! Really glad to see him taking his chance on Saturday, should be a good race!
February 18, 2012 at 10:14 #392141We all know what a ‘Fruitcake’ the horse is but look what he’s done to his lass?

Ahem!
Took the last chance of the season to complete but he did it and did it well
Well done old boy, brave and never touched a twigMay 1, 2012 at 10:10 #402659Always been one of my favourites and his win Saturday was a pleasure to watch.
Who would have thought that Tidal Bay would put in the most foot perfect round of jumping seen from a staying chaser this season? He’s never been a fantastic jumper – tends to bunny hop his fences – but has always found a way to get from A to B in all but one start and has never fallen over park fences.
Make no mistake, he doesn’t find jumping easy and John Francome was spot-on with his assumption that both trip and conditions would help him in that department Saturday.
Hasn’t really got the credit he deserves for this victory. He gave 20lb and a 15L beating to a promising horse who could quite easily win the Welsh National next season, and never came out of third gear in the process. You could see Daryl give him a squeeze shortly after the last and the response was that of a former Arkle winner – not too many horses could quicken like that in the blink of an eye after three and a half miles in testing ground.
How many horses have won an Arkle and a ‘Whitbread’?
jibsa, well done for keeping the faith, and I’m delighted that both Calgary and Tidal Bay won two big handicaps this year.
