So that’s it. Tizzard has said it’s the Ascot Chase, Gold Cup or Ryanair and then Aintree before retirement.
Hopefully he’ll win at least one to give us another moment to remember in a fantastic career.
December 15, 2017 at 20:17 #1332137What a career; and highly-tried all the way. I think he even contested the International Hurdle at C’ham in his first season as a novice, beaten by Menorah
December 15, 2017 at 21:40 #1332152I hope that the Aintree option isn’t the bloody National !
December 16, 2017 at 12:58 #1332337why not retire it now- horse has blatantly had enough.
December 16, 2017 at 18:06 #1332472Three runs is only what will happen if Cue Card is going well at home. Not a definite three runs. Christ, if Tizzard hadn’t said anything you lot would be moaning when the horse misses the King George. It’s good he’s lined up possible targets and made it public.
It would be pretty stupid announcing retirement and then Cue Card suddenly shows much more at home (which although I think is highly unlikely is still a possibility). A horse as good as Cue Card could be able to win a race like the Ascot Chase even if a stone below his best. When in A1 condition he also runs with enthusiasm – loves his racing – doubt he’d be as happy in a field. Yes, that enthusiasm has been lacking this season, so if things don’t change should be retired.
However, they’ve already ruled out their first supposed target – King George – and am sure if Cue Card is showing little sparkle at home the team won’t run anywhere.
Give the owner and trainer a break, lads.
Value Is EverythingDecember 16, 2017 at 19:18 #1332495I take your point Ginge, and it is possible that he could still win another race (although unlikely in my view).
I just wish the connections had handled it a bit more like Steve Preston with Sire de Grugy though.December 16, 2017 at 19:44 #1332508Suspect something has happened in training. Taunton mooted then KG then suddenly nothing until the spring. Most unlike the Tizzards who’ve always been happy just to take a punt.
December 16, 2017 at 22:03 #1332532I think the plan is to get him to Ascot first. After ruling out the KG they were quite keen to run him in the re-arranged Peterborough Chase. Something might have happened in between and they certainly need some time to get him back to the track. Even a 50% fit Cue Card would have finished ahead of Josses Hill over 2m5f.
But, what happens if, let’s say, Top Notch would beat him at Ascot? Would they still consider the Ryanair? The Gold Cup is surely out of question in my opinion. But let’s see if they can get him back to any track by February.December 17, 2017 at 00:24 #1332566Three runs is only what will happen if Cue Card is going well at home. Not a definite three runs.
